We all know the importance of tossing out old makeup, but how often do you wash your makeup brushes? With every brush stroke, countless bacteria are clinging to those bristles. The nasty bacteria can clog pores and lead to unsightly blemishes and breakouts.
The only way to prevent dirty skin deposits is to clean makeup brushes on a regular basis. The general rule is to wash them at every month to kill germs. I usually wash my brushes every two weeks with warm water, antibacterial soap and let them air-dry overnight. Another option for disinfecting brushes is to use an alcohol-based cleanser on your brushes.
TIP: Make sure you continue rinsing until no color leaves the brush.
How often do you clean your makeup brushes? Do you use warm soapy water or a specific cleanser?

I’ve used a lot and I love the clinique!
i have mac brush cleanser now and it’s great and everything but i think im going to start using baby shampoo. it’s cheaper and so many ppl swear by it. plus it may not dry out my brushes as much.
If I remember correctly, you did a post about make-up brushes. Well, I marched right out to the MAC counter to get one and when that chick told me the price, I marched right out without it. I’ve been using that same little musty sponge for months now….works for me! Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to WIN one…hint hint 😉
K-Bear I did the same thing. LOL! I wash my brushes every 2 weeks with a moisturizing shampoo. So far so good!
@Antithesis – I’ve heard great things about baby shampoo too. Maybe I’ll give that a try!
@K-Bear & Rebee – Yes, some makeup brushes can be VERY expensive, but they are very worth it and can last a looong time if taken care of properly. I’ve had my same MAC blush brush for a couple of years now and the bristles don’t fall out like with other less quality brands.
^^ditto
Thanks for the information!
I hate to admit this but I never clean my brushes, I buy cheap brushes and just get new ones.
nice post!!
i use my brushes for painting
I usually use antibacterial wash to wash my brushes, I bought the mac cleansers about 3 years ago and thought I had lost it when I moved. Just found it scared to use it incase it has expired!! lol
You are so good BG. I don’t clean my brishes nearly often enough. Thanks for the reminder.
I love the Orgins cleaner but once it’s gone I’m switching to baby shampoo
I wash it once a month or so
should do it more often
I wash it with water and soap or shampoo
