8 Reasons Why Attending the Essence Music Festival is a Must

When it comes to music festivals, Essence takes the cake and this year was no exception.

Held in New Orleans every year since its 1995 inception, the Essence Music Festival brings black women together from around the country and possibly across the globe during the 4th of July weekend for three days of food, fellowship, empowerment and of course, music.

This was my second year in a row attending the popular event (with my cousin) and it was nothing short of amazing. In fact, I’m still on a high from all of last week’s fun. From the delicious food that only the Big Easy can bring to the inspiring sessions and activations to the high-wattage concerts, Essence Fest epitomizes the vibrancy and all-around #BlackGirlMagic that makes us enviable and awesome.

essence-fest-new-orleans

If you’ve never made the pilgrimage to the festival, don’t miss out again. Start planning now so you can see what the hype is all about. Trust me, if you go, you won’t regret it. It’s an event that every black woman should experience at least once in her lifetime.

Below, find several reasons why you need to mark your calendars now for next year:

Fashion epicenter
It’s no secret that we black women are the frontrunners when it comes to fashion. The bright and bold getups that we coordinate and accessorize pop up on runways and in fashion spreads years after we’ve popularized them. So, at Essence Fest you get to see head-turning styles up close and personal with the women who set the trends that others follow.

The Crescent City transforms into a massive catwalk and is the perfect backdrop for us Nubian queens to strut our stuff freely and confidently. Additionally, there are black-owned shops with a myriad of products for sell. Whether you’re on the hunt for clothes or accessories, Essence Fest has you covered thanks to business owners who set up shop at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Natural hair and beauty mecca
If you’re in need of hair inspiration, look no further than Essence Fest. Whether you wear your hair in braids, twists, an Afro, locs or somewhere in between, there will be plenty of styles to inspire your next look. You’ll leave with a ton of ideas and concepts that you never imagined. Seeing your fellow brown girls rocking unique styles makes Essence Fest double as a hair and beauty show.

Delectable food
New Orleans is practically synonymous with good food. There’s no other city in America with authentic, southern creole cuisine like NOLA. From mouthwatering gumbo to charbroiled oysters, the menus around the city are brimming with Cajun flavor. Oh, and the city’s sweet pralines and sugary beignets (from Café Du Monde) are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. The unique fare is such an integral part to the Essence Fest experience that there are food vendors inside the convention center to give visitors a taste of the city under one roof.

No visit to New Orleans is complete without stopping by Cafe Du Monde for coffee and beignets in the French Quarter.

Nonstop Parties
If you don’t want to party, you should probably skip the festival altogether. Well, not exactly, but you should definitely rethink your stay. For starters, New Orleans is basically one big ole’ party. With throngs of people walking down Bourbon Street tossing beads, drinking and dancing, it’s safe to say that partying is a priority for most festivalgoers. While you don’t have to let loose in the middle of the sidewalk, you can unwind to your liking at one of the countless Essence-sponsored and non-sponsored parties taking place throughout the weekend.

This year I attended a couple parties including one hosted by Dark and Lovely that was so much fun. They had hair demos, interactive photo booths, drinks and great music. Finding a dance party is easy – if you don’t snag any invites prior to your arrival ask around – there are always plenty of options.

Empowering seminars
We all need to recharge our batteries from time to time and Essence Fest gives us an opportunity to sit down and get an uplifting word. With inspiring speakers that talk about issues that affect us as black women, attending the sessions and seminars at the convention center are a must. From fibroids to finances, the topics run the gamut, but they’re always relevant and delivered through the lens of the black American woman. Plus, plenty of our favorite celebrities offer insights on issues pertaining to their careers and personal lives.

Energetic concerts
Music is at the heart of the Essence Fest and for a good reason. Nothing unites people like the power of music. During the 3-day festival, R&B and hip-hop acts take center stage at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome (and in Super Lounges) each night. This year’s performances were outstanding. With a throwback New Jack Swing set led by the legendary Teddy Riley, and Janet Jackson headlining, this ‘80s baby was in music heaven. The concerts are my favorite part of the festival and such a great opportunity to sing and dance with your girls.

Immersive brand activations
Many of our favorite brands are on-hand during the festival. For me, nothing makes me happier than Disney so the fact that the iconic brand has had booths during both of my visits was a cherry on top of already incredible experiences.

This year Ruth Carter, the Oscar-nominated costume designer, spoke about her work on the groundbreaking “Black Panther” movie. Additionally, the Disney booth displayed costumes from the characters of Wakanda, as well as the garments worn during the upcoming “The Nutcracker” release. There were also “Christopher Robin,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it Ralph 2,” and “Four Realms” displays to promote the forthcoming films. If that wasn’t enough, there was also a 10-year anniversary display celebrating Marvel films like “Avengers,” “Ant Man” and more!

Plus, Disney gave attendees a pair of Minnie ears, which were the perfect accessory for the fun photo activation. Visiting booths are a fun way to engage with the brands that resonate with you.

Beautiful bonding
Essence magazine was created to celebrate black women and that mission remains. Essence Fest is an annual gathering that brings us together to laugh, make new friends and just marvel at and respect our tenacity, sisterhood, undeniable beauty and overall, well, essence. The festival allows us to escape the harsh realities of the outside world – it’s like a giant cocoon that protects us from the injustices, racist remarks, snubs and other slights that so many of us face in our everyday lives. Essence Fest is a stress-free zone that just lets us be!

Pretty-in-Pink at PinkNic with Love Beauty and Planet

This past weekend was what dreams are made of.

Thanks to my lovely friends at Love Beauty and Planet — an eco-friendly vegan hair & skincare  brand — I had the pleasure of attending the third annual PinkNic rosé picnic and music festival on Governors Island in New York City.

The two-day, picture-perfect event was filled with fun, good food, awesome music and of course people clad in their favorite shades of pink (and white) gathered for a chic afternoon of mingling, rosé sipping and sunbathing in the heart of New York Harbor.

As we got closer to the event, a bubble-gum-pink painted Ferris Wheel came into view, making a striking contrast against the bright, blue sky. Upon entering the event, attendees were greeted by beautiful stilt-walkers towering over guests in decorative, cotton-candy-colored costumes that looked straight out of Cirque du Soleil. Everyone in attendance looked stunning and those who wanted to amp up their looks even more were treated to a hairstyling booth sponsored by Love, Beauty and Planet.

At the beauty station, guests could get their hair styled eye-catching braids, flowers and scarves for beautiful, festival-ready looks. I was immediately drawn to the satin pink scarves to take my look up a notch. I tied the scarf around my head, creating a bandana-style headband that looked adorable, if I do say so myself!

pinknic-instagram

Throughout the Love, Beauty and Planet space, there were fun activations like a see-saw, stationery bike and heart-shaped wall for guests to share short, hand-written messages about how they plan to help the environment. The wall activation is part of the brand’s #SmallActsofLove campaign, that promotes ways in which people can help preserve the earth. Whether it’s using glass water bottles or recycling your old makeup containers, all small acts lead to big impacts for the environment.

The brand’s designated area also had baskets of their Cleansing Body Mist for guests to enjoy on the sweltering hot day. Infused with coconut water, the refreshing mist smelled heavenly and was the perfect antidote for the scorching heat. It’s now one of my favorite summertime essentials to combat rising temps. In fact, I’m packing it for my trip to New Orleans for the Essence Festival later this week.

In addition to Love, Beauty and Planet’s cutesy beauty booth, the rest of the picnic space had been transformed into a pastel, social media paradise. With adorable backdrops at every turn, there were endless Instagram-worthy shots that would make any influencer swoon at the photo possibilities. Plus, the stage was even decked out with pink lights.

Pink has always been one of my favorite colors, but after attending this pink party, my love for the girly shade has grown. If you are a fan of pink, pretty arrangements and decorations, then keep your eyes peeled for next year’s can’t-miss pink party!

Have you ever used any Love, Beauty and Planet products? If so, what are your favorites? Have you ever attended PinkNic?

National Geographic Encounter ‘Ocean Odyssey’ Takes Visitors On an Immersive Underwater Adventure

Immersive experiences are changing the entertainment game.

This past weekend, my kids and I visited National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey where we got the chance to see just how transformative virtual reality and digital technology can be when it comes to fun and recreation.

national-geographic-encounter-ocean-odyssey

Located in the heart of Times Square, the sprawling 60,000-square foot space is a first-in-kind, deep-sea multi-sensory attraction. My children didn’t know what to expect, but our journey from the South Pacific to the coast of California was off to a great start upon entry.

national-geographic-encounter-ocean-odyssey

As our adventure got underway, we were immediately transfixed and mesmerized by the aquatic details and authentic oceanic elements.

national-geographic-encounter-ocean-odyssey-2

As we made our way throughout the experience, our senses were treated to impeccable sights, sounds and textures that transported us to the depths of the deep blue sea. However, our journey wasn’t all seahorses and starfish – we also learned about dangerous coral reefs and treacherous predators that call the ocean home too.

From interactive play with adorable sea lions to an up-close-and-personal encounter with a humpback whale to a 3D swimming session with a massive school of fish, the guided tour is chock full of amazing visuals and awesome, educational storytelling.

Plus, after the guided tour and making your through a mind-bending maze, visitors are free to dive into a variety of cool interactive displays including games and educational kiosks in Exploration Hall, as well as an adjoining museum featuring stunning photography that highlights the negative impact plastic has on our marine life and overall environment.

Review: ‘Funkedified’ Takes Audiences on a Funky Dance Trip Back in Time

Before there was hip-hop, there was funk!

This past weekend, I took the kids to see “Rennie Harris: Funkedified” at the New Victory Theater here in New York City.

The 60-minute performance celebrates the origins of street dance including popping, locking and breakdancing.

Set in the ‘70s,  the show features mesmerizing flips, unbelievable footwork and crazy acrobatics accompanied by an incredible live band. “Funkedified” fuses two separate eras of funk—old school and contemporary—while pushing the genre’s boundaries.

New-Victory-Funkedified

Long before hip-hop dominated pop culture, the sounds of George Clinton, James Brown and other kings and queens of funk music were a mainstay on the airwaves in the ‘70s. The jazzy beats and soulful rhythms inspired a culture of social party dances within African-American communities throughout the country, primarily on the east coast. This spellbinding performance pays homage to the dance genre that paved the way for hip-hop and cemented it as a force within modern culture.

It’s a funky trip back in time that entertains children while educating them on a dance and music genre that sometimes gets forgotten. It’s good for little ones to learn about the origins of some of their favorite dances and music that they hear today. In fact, my son loves to breakdance. We’re not sure where he picked it up, but when asked to dance, he hits the floor and moves!  So, exposing him to his favorite dance on a professional level in a big stage was a cool experience.

Both of my kids enjoyed the show from start to finish. From the flips to the breakdancing, it was a fun afternoon for all. The hard part was staying in our seats!

TopView Sightseeing Review: Touring New York City from the Top

This past Memorial Day Weekend was one to remember.

My family visited from out of town like they normally do for the holiday, but this time it was extra special.

Thanks to TopView Sightseeing, my mom, sister and niece joined me and my two children on an unforgettable multi-day bus tour of New York City.

topview-nyc-tours-memorial-day

The hop on hop off sightseeing company boasts a large fleet of double-decker buses for tourists and locals alike to experience an adventurous ride through the Big Apple via five different routes: Downtown, Uptown, Brooklyn, the Bronx and a Night Tour.

I was excited to learn all about my second home and the birthplace of my children.

topview-sightseeing-tour

When we boarded our bus, which was conveniently located in the Theater District just steps from Times Square, we were greeted with a super friendly driver who promised to make our Downtown Tour as fun and informative as possible.

As soon as we entered, we grabbed our complimentary headphones and headed upstairs. The weather was picture-perfect so what better way to experience the journey through the city that never sleeps than to see it from the top view of course!

topview-sightseeing-tours-nyc

As we made our way to the upper deck, we were pleasantly surprised to find a row with five seats, ideal for our large group. I chose to sit in front so I’d have ample space to take pictures of their reactions to the sights.

Once we settled into our seats, we plugged in our headphones. Immediately, our ears were treated to the sweet sounds of New York City-inspired tunes. From Frank Sinatra’s classic ode to Gotham City to Brooklyn-born Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind,” quintessential New York City songs were the perfect soundtrack for our thrilling excursion.

After the pristine bus pulled off from our starting point, the impressive GPS-triggered audio got underway. Think of it as ‘Siri’ or ‘Alexa’ guiding you through the city, but with a friendlier, more personable voice. Interesting and sometimes surprising facts about the Big Apple were sprinkled throughout—all available in eight languages. Tidbits ranging from how Times Square got its name to celebrity residences, the tour was chock-full of information.

As the bus made its way through the marquee-lined streets, my son was so excited and even exclaimed that the drive was like a ride at Disney World. His eyes beamed as he took in all the magnificent sights.

times-square-topview-tours-sightseeing

We made our way through the vibrant scene of Times Square — the crossroads of the world— all the way down to Chinatown and back up again—seeing some of the city’s most iconic sights along the way. In fact, we hopped the bus off to explore the popular Chelsea Market near the High Line stop. My family and I didn’t want the nearly two-hour tour to end. It was enjoyable from start to finish.

topview-nyc-tours

Unfortunately, the next day was a total wash-out with seemingly endless rainstorms so we stayed home the following day. But the chillier air and gusty winds didn’t keep us in for long. On Monday, we decided to go on the Uptown Tour to get a glimpse of Central Park, Harlem and Museum Row—but due to the blustery weather, we opted to stay downstairs in the enclosed portion of the bus.

apollo-theater-topview-sightseeing

For my mom, seeing the legendary Apollo Theater was a major highlight. Although she’s visited the city many times throughout the years, she had never gone to Harlem. My sister and niece were mesmerized by the Guggenheim Museum’s eye-catching architecture while I was excited to see parts of Columbia University. Even though I’ve lived here for years, it was the first time I saw parts of the Ivy League campus.

As the Uptown Tour began to wind down, we all got a bit sad that our ticket to the sights of New York City was expiring soon. We knew that what we experienced was priceless and would live on in our memories. As a Windy City transplant of 15 years, I thought I’d seen most of the city, but this bus tour allowed me to see it through an entirely new lens.

topview-tours-nyc-sightseeing

Both days were filled with unmatched energy, education and entertainment. The trip exceeded my expectations and I hope to one day take the Bronx and the night tour. After these memorable excursions, I encourage all New York tourists, locals and natives to get out and see the Empire City like never before!

Product Review: ORS Olive Oil Incredibly Rich Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion

Like many Black women around the country, I’ve embraced my natural curls. I’ve worn my hair in its natural state for nine years now and I’ll probably never go back to chemically-straightened strands.

Thus, I’ve tried countless hair care products that claim to cater to my newly-discovered texture. However, I’ve been disappointed more times than I can count. So, when I come across products that work for my hair type, I stick with them. For me, Organic Root Stimulator (ORS) is one of those brands. Not only do their offerings turn my thick, super dry hair into an ultra-hydrated mane, it also works wonders on my daughter’s fine curls. Particularly, the Olive Oil Incredibly Rich Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion.

Olive-Oil-Hair-Lotion-Refresh

ORS Olive Oil Incredibly Rich Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion available here, $6

I received this hydrating oil cream in a gift bag earlier this year and it’s become the go-to moisturizer for me and my daughter. Although it’s a cream, it’s remarkably light and doesn’t weigh down our hair, yet provides just the right amount of hydration and sheen.

ors-hair-moisturizing-cream

My daughter has fine, easy-to-tangle hair while I have thick, coarse curls. I’ve found the moisturizer to work wonders on both of us. It’s great for braiding my daughter’s hair and for achieving the perfect twist-out or quintessential afro puff. Plus, it’s infused with castor oil, a natural lubricant that strengthens hair and prevents breakage.

ors-moisturizing-hair-lotion

If you’re on the hunt for a good, affordable moisturizer that doesn’t leave hair super greasy or weighted down, look no further. Trust me, your hair will thank you!

‘200 Women’ Photo Exhibit Celebrates Women from Around the World

It’s no secret that women run the world.

That sentiment was on full display at the “200 Women: who will change the way you see the world” exhibit preview party last night at Pen + Brush Gallery in New York City.

The project features portraits and stories of 200 hundred women from around the globe who were willing to be filmed and share their responses prompted from five fundamental questions:

  • What really matters to you?
  • What brings you happiness?
  • What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
  • What would you change if you could?
  • Which single word do you most identify with?

Regardless of nationality, race, religion, status or celebrity, these women graciously let their guards down to the projects creators, Geoff Blackwell, Ruth Hobday and Kieran E. Scott—selflessly exposing their raw emotions, ultimately shining a light on humanity.

200-Women-Photo-Exhibit

From pioneering political activist Angela Davis to today’s #BlackLivesMatter co-founder Alicia Garza, the exhibit showcases many women who are making a difference in society. But notables aren’t the only ones featured, the storytelling project also includes accounts from artists, entrepreneurs, business leaders, domestic workers and more.

If you aren’t in the New York City area and can’t make it to the show, fret not. There’s an accompanying book available for purchase. Plus, after the exhibit’s conclusion tour in November, a one-off exhibition edition of the photographic prints will be available.

200-Women-Photo-Book

“200 Women: who will change the way you see the world” is available here, $50.

If celebrating women and hearing empowering stories sounds like fun, be sure to stop by (free entry) Pen + Brush, 29 E. 22nd Street, New York, NY now through June 30th.

I’m taking a page out of the “200 Women” book, and asking you, “what brings you happiness?”

Pixie Dust Dreams: A Magical Morning at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

My family and I have made plenty of priceless memories at Walt Disney World.

But, there’s one magical experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart—our pre-dawn visit and breakfast at Animal Kingdom.

animal-kingdom-disney-world

The exclusive early sunrise event was held during the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration this past February and it was the stuff of pixie dust dreams.

Entering the park before daybreak was beyond anything I could’ve imagined. The tranquility created an unforgettable, enchanting atmosphere. Hearing the chirping birds, seeing the dewy greenery and breathing in the warm, misty air was like a fantasy—perfectly fitting for a Disney Park. The magic was palpable.

animal-kingdom-pandora

To walk through the park without anyone but the #DisneySMMC crew (the park wasn’t open to the public yet), was an opportunity of a lifetime. Upon reaching Pandora—The World of Avatar, we were met with two options: indulge in a delicious breakfast fit for kings and queens or explore the park’s two new popular attractions: The Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. We chose the latter and decided to eat after experiencing the rides.

As the sun began to rise, we made our way to Flight of Passage where we were completely blown away by Pandora’s spellbinding beauty. Colorful flora and cascading waterfalls abound. We had been transported to another world: The World of Avatar.

An unforgettable flight – Flight of Passage
Our excitement grew with every step along the winding pathway to Avatar Flight of Passage. Once inside the cavern-like space, which was outfitted as a science lab—we saw a blue male creature floating in a giant test tube. It was Jake Sully from Avatar! I thought my 4-year-old son would be frightened by the blue being, but to my surprise he was in awe and fascinated by it.

flight-of-passage-avatar-skully

Once we entered the launch pods, we were prepped for what would be an incredible journey through the land of Pandora. From start to finish, we were immersed in a fanciful alternative universe where we rode flying banshees and soared through the sky. The virtual reality ride felt so real—we could feel water splashing on our faces, the wind whipping through our hair and every dip and drop—engaging all our senses.

To say the 3D ride was exhilarating would be an understatement. Simply put, it was the best ride I’ve ever experienced. My daughter would agree because she rode it THREE times!

A Na’vi River Journey
For me, nothing is as relaxing and soothing as a boat ride. That’s why I absolutely loved hopping on the Na’vi River Journey for a smooth ride through Pandora’s everglades. Our eyes and ears were treated at every turn. Glowing violets, electric blues and emerald green plants and floating jellyfish surrounded us—creating a mystical wonderland.

navi-river-journey-pandora-ride

Near the end of the rainforest journey, we were entranced by the Na’vi Shaman of Song’s mesmerizing music.  The catchy chants had us humming the tunes long after the ride was over.

Like the classic Magic Kingdom ride, It’s a Small World, Na’vi River Journey is one that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Magical Breakfast
After exploring Pandora, we made our way to breakfast where we found a bountiful spread to get us energized for what would be a full day at Animal Kingdom. The rest of our time at the park was one of my most cherished memories. We visited DinoLand U.S.A where we rode Dinosaur and explored the Boneyard. Then we took a safari through Africa where my kids saw giraffes, hippopotamuses and flamingos for the first time! It was an incredible experience that none of us will soon forget.

animal-kingdom-safari

I love all the Disney Parks & Resorts, but if I were forced to choose a favorite, it just might be Animal Kingdom!

Have you ever visited Animal Kingdom? If so, what’s your favorite attraction?
