‘Stomp’: A Sonic Sensation

stomp-off-broadway

Many parents know that pots and pans are just about every child’s first musical instruments. What baby hasn’t crawled into a kitchen and quickly turned it into his or her own personal concert hall?

After recently seeing the groundbreaking off-Broadway show, “STOMP,” I’m convinced that just about any household item or even garbage for that matter can be transformed into an innovative musical tool.

Since opening its stage doors in 1994 at the iconic Orpheum Theatre in the East Village, the unique show has been a must-see for New Yorkers and theatergoers from all over the world. Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, this show-stopping production has been making noise for more than two decades and shows no signs of slowing down.

Comprised of several talented body percussionists, the team of performers captivated audiences through non-verbal storytelling that comes to life through sound. Set in an industrial space littered with infinite musical possibilities, the garage inspired stage served as the perfect backdrop for the sonically pleasing performance. From paper bags to shopping carts, the music created from ordinary everyday items was nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Plus, there was a comedic component to the show that further proved that you don’t have to speak to make people laugh. My daughter enjoyed the visual comedy and burst out laughing at some of the silly antics performed by Alan Asuncion – the show’s main funnyman. Not only was she entertained by the show’s humor, but also she was of course blown away by all of the interesting things in which music can be found. The brilliant choreography also kept us intrigued from start to finish.

But, the true message of the show was showing that there’s beauty in some of the most mundane items and it can be revealed through the universal language: music and sound.

If you’re looking for a feet-stamping, finger-snapping good time, get to Orpheum Theater and get ready to be taken on a jamming journey.

Below, take a peek at the show:

**Disclosure:  I was invited to attend and cover STOMP for my blog.

Tickets are available through www.Ticketmaster.com or at the box office.  For groups of 10+, please call toll free 855-203-9980. STOMP currently plays in New York on the following schedule: Tue-Fri at 8 PM, Sat at 3 & 8 PM, Sun at 2 & 5:30 PM. Tickets are $89 at all performances.

GIVEAWAY: Baby Magic Products to Keep Baby Fresh & Clean

There are scents that just stay with you. New car, fresh baked cookies and newborn babies are the first to come to mind. For many, the latter is a smell that we moms wish could linger forever. Unfortunately, infants grow up and no longer possess that unique scent.

Until then, we can slather them in Baby Magic’s “Original Baby Scent” lotion – my favorite for after bath time. Somehow the legacy brand managed to bottle the elusive smell we moms crave and sold it to the masses. In fact, they’ve been in the business of making babies smell heavenly and clean since 1951! Oh, and course they accomplish this by infusing that fresh scent into many of their products including cleansers, shampoos and moisturizers.

The heritage brand has been in homes for generations and has definitely been a part of my son’s life. Not only do the products have an addictive aroma, but they also get the job done—without causing any skin irritations.

There’s a reason why it’s been around so long, quality products and that fresh baby scent keeps families coming back!

In celebration of the brand’s 65th anniversary, I’m partnering with them for a giveaway. I’ll be giving away three of my all-time favorite products to a lucky winner.

Simply leave a comment below or tweet me @BrownGirlGumbo letting me know how you make bath time fun. The contest ends on 9/19/16 at 11:59 EST. The winner will be randomly selected and notified via email by 9/21/16.

Giving Back this Back-to-School Season

If your child hasn’t already returned to class, the countdown to back-to-school is now in full swing.

Shopping for crayons, Post-It notes, pocket folders and everything else in between can be a fun experience for kids and parents alike. Unfortunately, not every family can afford to provide their child with the proper supplies needed to succeed at school.

That’s why for the past 16 years, the Office Depot Foundation has been giving back-to-school sackpacks to those in need. Through the company’s National Backpack Program, colorful drawstrings bags are filled with basic essentials to ensure that all students have a thriving school year. Each one includes a zippered pouch containing a pen, pencil, pencil sharpener, eraser, six-inch ruler and four crayons. Plus, none of the sackpacks have any of the company’s branding or logos—an added bonus!

Since 2001, the program has donated over 4 million backpacks and sackpacks to children across the country. And they couldn’t be successful without other organizations’ assistance with getting the bags into the hands of students. This year, they’ve donated 200,000 sackpacks to nonprofit organizations, schools and agencies across the United States and internationally.

When it comes to shopping for school and office supplies, we have many choices – but when we can support a business that gives back, it makes that choice less difficult.

Disclosure: I was given several sackpacks, which I plan to donate to my daughter’s school—hopefully helping a child in need.

On the Hook: Family Fishing with Macy’s + Prospect Park Alliance

Growing up in Chicago, fishing wasn’t something that my family did.

Amusement parks, zoos and backyard BBQs were our summer activities of choice. But, even for a city girl like me, I’ve always wanted to go fishing.

Thanks to Macy’s, a couple of weeks ago I was able to cross the leisure sport off my bucket list!

The brand invited my family and me to an afternoon of fishing at The Lake Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. The pop-up catch-and-release class was a media-only event to celebrate the company’s partnership with the Prospect Park Alliance.

Since my husband had never gone fishing either, it was the perfect opportunity for us to learn the ins and outs of fishing as a family. The instructor showed us how to bait and hook, as well as provided us with tips on the best ways to catch an unsuspecting pumpkinseed sunfish or largemouth bass. My 6-year-old daughter and nearly 3-year-old son were excited because in their minds, they were going to catch “Nemo” and release him back into the ocean. After an hour or so of applying all of the tips and tricks the instructor gave us, we eventually decided to call it quits.

Although we were unsuccessful in finding “Nemo,” it was a wonderful family bonding moment that I’ll forever cherish. And now that I know that Prospect Park Alliance offers fishing, we’ll be sure to flex our fishing skills again next summer!

If you’re in the Brooklyn area, click here to see if they’re offering classes before summer’s end.

Have you and your family ever gone fishing? If so, please share any strategic tips!

Nail It With Topnotch Top Coats

Confession: I hate painting my nails.

I have friends who absolutely love giving themselves manicures—I mean they live for it. But for me, it’s not high on my list of to-dos. In fact, it’s usually done as a last resort right before a big meeting or special event.

But, when I’m in a pinch and need a fast manicure fix, Sally Hansen products are my go-to. They have super pigmented polishes that don’t chip after the first dip in the sink. Plus, they’re affordable and offer a wide variety of colors. But, we all know that in order for those colors to pop, you have to add a great top coat. Whether you’re rocking a classic red or subtle nude, applying a glossy or matte top coat is essential to completing a professional, manicured look.

The brand’s Big Shiny Top Coat and Big Matte Top Coat will be your nails’ BFF this fall. Both enhance and strengthen, while providing a layer of protection.

Applying the top coat is my favorite part of DIY manis—it’s clear, making it virtually foolproof. Plus, these particular polishes set incredibly fast—Big Shiny boasts drying in less than 60 seconds!

While I’m all about glossy finishes, matte overlays will be all the rage this season. The matte option can quickly transform a shiny coat into an modern, look-at-me mani that exudes edge. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and grab a bottle to complement your new autumn-inspired nail colors.

Shiny or Matte? Which top coat gets your vote?

The Moodsters: Teaching Preschoolers All About Emotions

Dealing with everyday emotions as adults can be difficult, but for children and toddlers, it can be even trickier.

Thankfully The Moodsters, an educational line of toys and books designed to teach preschoolers about emotional intelligence makes learning about their feelings fun.

Through engaging storytelling—love, fear, sadness, anger and happiness are all personified via friendly characters that go on a quest to help discover and navigate the ups and downs of emotions.

Founded by Denise Daniels, an award-winning broadcast journalist and parenting and child development expert, The Moodsters are the perfect back-to-school gifts for your preschooler.

My almost 3-year-old son adores these books and accompanying toys. He enjoys pointing to each character and muttering their roles: “scary, happy, angry…” The books are really helping him understand the range of his emotions—and we moms know that their moods can change in a millisecond!

Available at Target and Amazon, these books will be a great addition to your little one’s library and toy chest!

How the Olympics Made Little Brown Girls Dream Big

The 2016 Summer Olympic games may have come and gone, but the positive effect it had on little brown girls around the world will last a lifetime.

If you had never heard of Simone Biles prior to the global sporting event of the summer, you’re not alone. Admittedly, I wasn’t familiar with the athletic dynamo either, but like you, I quickly became acquainted. After leaving all kinds of #blackgirlmagic sprinkled throughout Rio’s arenas, seemingly overnight the world knew her name.

Photo via Simone Biles’ Instagram

While we adults were proud and admiring her record-breaking achievements in gymnastics, our little ones seemed to be even more enthralled. To say that my daughter, Ava, was mesmerized by Simone’s gravity defying acrobatic moves would be an understatement.

As a self-proclaimed gymnast, she was glued to the television (or tablet screen) every night to watch Simone work her magic from the balance beam to the uneven bars. No matter what flip or tumble she did, Ava marveled at her every move. After each of Simone’s effortless leaps, Ava said, “Mommy I can do that!” And I, of course assured her that yes, she could in fact replicate Simone’s awe-inspiring moves and possibly perform them even better – just with a bit of determination and practice.

Taking home an astonishing four gold medals (individual all around, vault and floor—plus a bronze medal for women’s beam), Simone was clearly her favorite, but the gymnastics superstar was far from the only BG rocking the Olympic stage. Simone Manuel broke down barriers of being the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual swimming event, while Team USA’s women’s track and field team took home several first-place prizes.

Witnessing these astounding achievements made by young African-American women gives my daughter and all brown girls the ability to dream big and know that their goals are within reach and attainable.

Now that’s #blackgirlmagic!

The Only Bronzer You’ll Need to Get Glowing Skin

With one full month of summer left, now’s the time to highlight your melanin-rich tan.  What better way to bring out those gorgeous gold and red undertones than swathing on a bronzer?

Whether you want to accentuate your cheekbones or define areas where the light natural hits, dusting on a little bronzer goes a long way—but tread lightly. Don’t overdo it, otherwise you’ll end up looking like a an oompa loompah or that presidential candidate that rhymes with “dump.” Apply just a bit to the bridge of your nose or along your brow bone for a sun-kissed glow.

To channel my inner J-Lo, I’ve been using jane iredale’s quad bronzer in “Moonglow” for years and for good reason. First, the compact comes in four complementary shades for us BGs and it’s made with all-natural minerals that won’t clog pores. Plus, unlike other brands, it doesn’t have an ultra-shimmery tone. With gold flecks throughout, it provides just a  hint of color to keep skin looking luminous all summer long.

Could a Landline Be Your Lifeline? 3 Tips for Keeping Your Home Safe This Summer

With two small kids at home, keeping them safe is always my top priority. However, to my surprise, there’s one thing that could hinder my best efforts—not having a landline telephone.

Like many people under 40, my husband and I rely on our cell phones to make calls instead of an actual landline. While practical, it isn’t the smartest decision, especially with children in the home.

Here’s a shocking fact:  According to an investigation by USA Today, the chances of 911 dispatchers being able to find you based on your cell phone’s GPS can be as low as 10% in some parts of the country.  With a significant share of cell phone-to-911 calls being placed from within residences—and 45% of Americans opting out of landline coverage at home—countless people are left vulnerable in emergencies. That’s a startling stat.

Plus, our children stay with a caregiver making them even more vulnerable if an emergency should strike and our nanny isn’t able to make a call on her cell phone. Having a landline would be handy for them to dial for help if they’re in danger, etc.

In the spirit of keeping you and your family safe, I recently partnered with Ooma, a leading Internet home phone service with reliable E911 technology—to deliver three tips for keeping your home safe this summer in addition to owning a landline.

ooma

TIP #1:  KEEP A FIRST AID KIT AT THE READY

Whether it’s for a small scrape or something far worse, it’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit handy.  People who call 911 from their cell phone are often surprised at how long emergency workers take to arrive on scene.  According to the recent Ooma.com 911 Emergency Response Study, more than one in five cell phone callers feel it takes too long—that’s seven times higher than for people who call from a landline.  If you’re often in situations when only a cell phone is available, consider keeping a first aid kit nearby.

TIP #2:  WRITE AN EMERGENCY CONTACT LIST

Make sure that no matter where you are, it’s easy for the people around you to call your emergency contacts. Consider posting your own number, as well as first response numbers, on your fridge so your kids know how to reach you and your family, family members who live close by, or the authorities.  Post the name and number of a trusted friend or neighbor, too.  With Ooma’s home phone system, up to three of these contacts can be notified by text message automatically when a 911 call is placed.  In situations when every second counts, this reliable Internet-based technology could save tens of thousands of lives.

TIP #3: RECOGNIZE THE FIRST SIGNS OF DANGER

Educate your kids about the sights, smells, and sounds of danger.  If they hear a smoke alarm or see an appliance overheating, advise your children to get outside as quickly as possible.  Planning an exit strategy is key to getting a safe distance away from the house so you can alert a neighbor and have them call the fire department.  Consider making a detailed fire plan with multiple escape routes and keeping a printed copy of your fire plan on visible walls around your house.

If money is a concern, first aid kits are affordable, lightweight and easy to store, while the price of a secure Ooma landline is less expensive than a Netflix subscription. So, do you and your family a favor and take the proper precautions to keep them safe—it could be a matter of life and death.

Be sure to follow Ooma on Facebook and Twitter for more tips on how to keep your family safe this summer and beyond.

Suffer from dry skin? I may have found the solution to your moisture-zapped woes.

I’ve always had super dry skin. No matter how much oil or lotions I slathered on, somehow, some way, the sheen would be short-lived. From fancy creams to expensive emollients, I’ve used a variety of products in hopes of finding relief. Sure, some fared better than others, but none have been as effective as Skin + Pharmacy’s Advanced Skin Therapy Extended Moisture Body Lotion. Yep, a drugstore brand has been my best discovery.

And it’s not your typical lotion. It’s infused with coconut oil and an apple-derived fruit extract to help bind water to skin, allowing for optimal absorption. Plus, it features a moisture-restoring technology that keeps my skin hydrated ALL day long.

To top it off, it’s fragrance free and never greasy. I’ve tried the entire line and my other favorite product is the Healing Gel, which is excellent for restoring, irritated areas. I like to use it on my calloused heels—instantly making them super soft and supple.
