Move Over Beyoncé, There’s Another Lemonade to Rave About

While the world is still buzzing about Beyoncé’s epic “Lemonade” album, there’s another lemonade that deserves just as much attention, and this one happens to be an actual beverage!

Me & the Bees Lemonade is a refreshing line of homemade lemonade whose founder is only 11 years old. Founded in 2009 by a then 4-year-old Mikaila Ulmer, the Texas-based brand started as a lemonade stand and has since flourished into a full-blown business.

After getting stung by two honeybees, Mikaila’s curiosity turned into learning everything she could about the insects. To her surprise, she discovered that the furry creatures weren’t just a nuisance, but an integral part of our food chain. That’s when she decided to use honey as her personal way to help the bugs that once caused her temporary pain.

Made from her great-grandmother’s recipe, the flaxseed-enriched lemonade is available in four delicious flavors: Ginger (my fave!), Iced Tea, Mint and Prickly Pear and are high-fructose corn syrup, preservative and additives free! Plus, a portion of all of the profits goes to organizations working hard to further help honeybees.

Tech giant Microsoft is helping Mikaila to grow her business with a Small Business Makeover, creating a Windows 10 app to help with ordering, labeling, fulfillment and more.

I recently caught up with the 6^th grader at Microsoft’s Dream.Create.Do. event in New York City to chat all about her business, her favorite subject and what she likes to do in her spare time.

BGG: How did you come up with the delicious flavors?
Mikaila Ulmer: Mint was the original. My company is based in Austin, Texas so there’s so much Prickly Pear here. So it’s like a cactus plant. in Texas so I thought it would be a great idea to use into my lemonade. It has a great unique taste and there’s no other Prickly Pear lemonade! My brother does pretty much everything I do—so, he wanted to create a ginger flavor of my lemonade. As for Iced Tea, it’s very popular in South Carolina where my great granny lives, so I decided to mix iced tea in my lemonade and make it like an Arnold Palmer.

BGG: Where can we buy your lemonade?
MU: We’re sold in L.A., Atlanta, Seattle and Whole Foods Markets in the southeast region of the country. We’re also sold in many local stores throughout Texas. We’re looking to go national with Whole Foods Markets!

BGG: What’s your favorite flavor?
MU: I love them all, but I enjoy drinking the ginger one in the morning because it has a nice kick. When i’m super sluggish in the morning and I don’t want to get up, it will get you up in 5 seconds!

BGG:What’s been the best part about running your own business?
MU: Going to different events and meeting a lot of cool poeple. The other day I met the CEO of Microsoft and I did an entire presentation with him. Also, I had the opportunity of speaking at Microsoft’s YouthSpark at We Day, where there are so many inspiring people . I went to the one in L.A. and Seattle and they were both really fun.

BGG: I know you’re a busy young lady, but what do you like to do for fun?
MU: I like to rollerblade, garden and hang out with my friends. Most people think that I run my business all day without making any time for myself. School is the priority, then the business, but I always make time friends and my brother.

BGG: What’s your favorite subject in school?
MU: I love my history teacher; he’s super fun! He makes learning fun. I also like science because we get to go into caves at school.

BGG: How do you use Microsoft to help run your business?
MU: I use Office 365 to do PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets and Word to type up different documents. I also use Microsoft Skype and Sway to inspire other kids. Sway is a creative way to present things in less than five minutes. I’m also learning how to code with Microsoft spark hub so I can help run my website. Oh and I also use my Surface Pro and my Microsoft band.

BGG: What do you the most about your Microsoft Band?
MU: You can send texts on it! It’s pretty cool.

The Period Shop: A Place to Celebrate Our Cycles

Periods. We women all have them. It’s something that unites us in femininity, yet it’s still a rather taboo topic. Well, that’s about to change! Thanks to U by Kotex, this weekend women in New York City can celebrate their menstrual cycles by shopping for kitschy and practical items that will get them through that special time of the month.

Inspired by Sarah M., an NYC-based college student’s Tumblr page denouncing the stigma attached to shopping for feminine products, she dreamed of having a place where women could get items without feeling ashamed of this ‘unmentionable’ natural occurrence that we all experience. Enter U by Kotex. Through their #PeriodProjects initiative, the Kimberly-Clark brand brought her vision to life in a gorgeous girly space filled with products that would probably make your great-grandmother blush.

I got a sneak peek of The Period Shop during a media preview and it is out-of-this-world cute. The ultra-feminine setting is inviting and comfy.

From tampon-emblazoned sweatshirts and pins to walls filled with chocolate bars, you can buy ultra-feminine merchandise including attire, accessories, home goods, beauty products, food and snacks, and of course U by Kotex products too! Plus, female DJs and musicians will be providing the soundtrack to this one-of-a-kind experience. The best part is that all proceeds from The Period Shop will be donated to Susan’s Place, a transitional residence that provides homeless women with housing support and a safe, supportive environment.

This pop-up shop is such an awesome concept and sends a great message. We shouldn’t be embarrassed by our bodies and what they do. Remember, without periods none of us would be here!

GIVEAWAY: Take the Nivea Lip Care Challenge

When Nivea asked if I wanted to take their Lip Care Challenge, I was more than game!

Since I’m a fan of the moisture-depleting matte lipstick trend, my lips were in need of some hydrating TLC.

Over the course of five days, I ditched my favorite, yet drying lipsticks and treated my lips to Nivea’s latest offerings. Before I started the challenge, I was instantly impressed by the clean and simple packaging. The frosted pastel-hued tubes were refreshing and unlike other lip treatments. I especially loved that it wasn’t wrapped in a cheaply adhered plastic label that’s found on similar products. Again, the look and feel of the tubes immediately won me over.

MONDAY: Nivea’s Original Moisture Care

On the first day, I can’t lie; I went through a bit of a withdrawal from that barely-there feel that accompanies most matte finishes. Forgoing my go-to lippies was an adjustment, but a welcomed one. By the end of the day I didn’t mind having a bit of lubrication on my lips.

TUESDAY: Nivea Milk & Honey

Next up was the Milk & Honey option. After using the original one the day prior, I was thrilled to try this sweet and soothing balm. It didn’t create that unsightly white residue that creeps into the corners of your mouth like other lip treatments. Plus, it had a nice hint of honey fragrance that didn’t smell artificial.

WEDNESDAY: Smoothness

On Hump Day I hit a slump and needed my color fix. I decided to only wear it in the evening once I got home and removed my makeup. It lived up to its name and replenished the zapped moisture of the day and made my lips feel extra smooth.

THURSDAY: Mint & Minerals

The minty flavor gave my pucker a fleeting, tingly boost. It didn’t have an overpowering menthol effect that can ruin some of good balms. It was a nice change.

FRIDAY: Shimmer

What better day than Friday to add a bit of shimmer? After having such a favorable week with all of the lip treatments, I was excited to try the final one. The subtle shimmer was just what I needed to finish out the week. It glided on effortlessly and left my lips kissably soft.

Overall, Nivea’s Lip Care treatments have earned a permanent spot in my makeup bag. The cute tube and ultra-moisturizing benefits will turn anyone into a balm fan. Plus, none of these five made my lips feel unbearably greasy or gross. Although the challenge is over, I’ll continue to keep my lips hydrated and chapped free!

Product Review: Dove’s New Dry Oil Moisture Body Wash

I’ve suffered from dry skin my entire life. When I tried Dove’s new Dry Oil Moisture Body Wash, my parched skin had finally been quenched.

Using Dove is nothing new for me—I’ve been a fan for years. But, this formula is like no other. The creamy wash is thick and rich, which means a little goes a long way. It lathers into a luxurious sudsy utopia that cleanses effortlessly while treating your senses to a pleasant, refreshing scent. While those things are boast-worthy, nothing tops the out-of-this-world hydration that this innovative body wash creates.

Rhode Island: A State Filled with Gems

Around this time last week, I was giddy with excitement because I was en route to Rhode Island.

While you’re probably thinking, “what’s so special about Rhode Island?” Well, when you’re a working, married mom of two, the thought of traveling solo on a 3-hour train ride alone is enough to make you shriek with thrill. Plus, they do say the fun is in the journey, right? Admittedly, the peace and tranquility on the train was a welcomed retreat, but the destination exceeded my already high expectations.

On behalf of the Rhode Island’s Department of Tourism, I was given the opportunity to discover the state’s rich jewelry history through a blogger tour. Getting out of the city for a day to learn about and play with jewelry? Yes please! However, if you’re like me, chances are you had no idea that Rhode Island has a significant association with jewelry in America. In fact, it’s the fashion jewelry capital of the world! Why had I never heard this before? I’m not sure, but it was very interesting to learn how that came to be.

From the 1920s through the 1980s, most of the country’s costume jewelry was manufactured in the heart of Rhode Island. Unfortunately, like many industries, the jobs dried up leaving behind a legacy of awesome craftsmanship and heritage. But, things are looking up! I had the pleasure of meeting some of the super talented jewelry designers who are ready to reignite that legacy.

The tour kicked off with a breakfast meet-and-greet with Rhode Island-based jewelry designers Nicole Romano, Loren Hope and Duo Duet. All of their offerings were standouts with undeniably unique designs. Each had eye-catching styles that were versatile enough for a variety of jewelry lovers.

Nicole Romano’s hand-crafted jewelry has a modern, whimsical vibe that would amp up your accessory game instantly.

Chic and sassy is the best way to describe Loren Hope’s contemporary collection of jewels.

Duo Duet’s innovative necklaces and bracelets are so lightweight that you might forget you’re wearing them, but the constant compliments you’ll get will remind you!

The next stop on the tour was in Pawtucket with all-American designer Kiel James Patrick, better known as KJP. I had never heard of this brand, but apparently I’ve been living under a rock! This self-made millionaire has a huge social media following, with over 300K followers on Instagram alone. His hand-crafted nautical, New England-inspired bracelets caught the eye kids in his hometown and spread like wildfire.

The thirty-something entrepreneur even racked up profiles in the New York Times and Town and Country magazine. We bloggers were able to tour the KJP headquarters to get a glimpse into how he makes his magic. The space was a cross between a chotki paradise and a modern day factory. With inspirations like John F. Kennedy and the iconic Ralph Lauren, he’s well on his way to becoming a household name.

Next up was a visit to Jessica Ricci. All of her ultra-feminine handcrafted jewelry goes through an extensive process of mold waxing, which then gets transformed into treasured pieces.

After leaving Jessica’s, we’d worked up an appetite and were whisked away to a lovely restaurant for lunch in Cranston. We landed at Bistro 22 where we relaxed, indulged and talked about our experience up to that point, blogging and more. Oh and did I mention, the food? It was outstanding! I ordered my go-to meal of choice—salmon, which was cooked to perfection!

While this maple-glazed salmon from Bistro 22 was scrumptious, I was still a bit hungry and ordered a side of fries to fill me up!

To my surprise, there was a candy store across the street from the bistro so of course I couldn’t resist and made my way to the gummy bears!

Unlike most confectionary shops, the sweets at Sweenor’s Chocolates were surprisingly reasonably priced. One bag of those gummy bears were only $2!

After filling our bellies, it was time to make one final stop: to the Providence Jewelry Museum. Our tour guide got us excited about what was in store from the moment we stepped inside. The unassuming building was filled with incredible finds. From a 19th century workbench from the quintessential jeweler, Tiffany’s to 1950’s jewel-encrusted murals, the museum was a true highlight on our tour.

Our tour guide informed us that this was a discarded Tiffany & Co. 19th century work bench. Can you imagine all of the precious jewels that have graced this workspace?

In addition, we were all able to make our own earrings using a machine from the early 20th century. To top off our tour, we were introduced to one more jeweler, Juan the founder of the up and coming urban line, Born Republic. His enthusiasm and passion was palpable. His designs were masculine with a sexy twist. His use of 3D technology helps bring his accessories to life.

Overall, it was a marvelous mini-getaway packed with fascinating history. Plus, who wouldn’t love looking at gorgeous jewelry all day?

5 Must-Have Matte Lipsticks for Spring

3 Things I’ve Learned Since Becoming a Full-Time Working Mom

Since I started blogging back in 2007, I’ve rarely missed more than a week of writing on BGG. Even after the birth of both of my children, I somehow managed to squeeze in time for my blog. However, now that I’m a mom of two small kids (ages 6 and 2) and working full-time, I’ve found keeping my blog current more challenging than ever.

After working from home for years and being thrust back into the outside professional world has been a huge adjustment. From finding a reputable nanny to scheduling extra-curricular activities, my mommy duties have shifted into high gear. Plus, the fact that I’ve only been on my new job for three months, is a challenge in of itself.

Even with the full support of my husband, being a working mother is one of the hardest, most fulfilling aspects of my life. I know my struggle with balancing it all isn’t unique, which is why I applaud all of my fellow mothers and the mothers before me, including my own.

This first quarter has definitely had its ups and downs, but I’m looking forward to what’s to come. Here’s how I plan to make the rest of the year better than ever!

Schedule some “me” time. If my batteries aren’t charged, I can’t be my best as a wife, mother or as an employee. Frankly, if I don’t allow time to relax and do things that I enjoy, I am doing everyone in my life a disservice.
Time Management. We all know that time is our most precious commodity. If we waste it on unproductive activities, we’re cheating ourselves out of time that could go towards tackling something of substance from your to-do list. I often fall victim to the swiping and scrolling rabbit hole of social media.
Accept that there’s no perfect balance. Acknowledging that there is no special formula to balancing it all is the best thing that we can do for ourselves. Sure, some things will suffer while other things flourish, but that’s just how life goes. The sooner we realize that no one has super powers—we just make the best out of our situations the better off we’ll all be!

Now that we’re a quarter of the way into the new year, what practices do you plan on implementing to ensure that the rest of 2016 is as great as possible?

Exclusive Interview: New ‘Rush Hour’ TV Series Star Justin Hires

It’s hard to believe that the original movie, “Rush Hour,” starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan hit theaters nearly 20 years ago! Admittedly, I loved the first film, but skipped the sequel and following installments.

Now, the runaway franchise is revving up a fresh new twist by bringing the story of Detective Carter and Detective Lee to the small screen.

I caught up with Justin Hines (Detective Carter), the star of the action-packed CBS-produced series to get the scoop on the new show and more!

Check out the Q&A below:

BGG: Who was the first person you called when you landed the lead role as Detective Carter on “Rush Hour?” Describe that moment.

Justin Hires: I believe it was either my mom or wife. They both sent me to voicemail. It’s always good to have people in your life to keep you humble.

BGG: What was the audition process like for the role?

JH: It was a super last minute audition. Originally, I couldn’t audition because I was attached to a pilot at another network, but CBS couldn’t find a “Detective Carter” they were completely satisfied with; so they had one final audition and allowed me to come in. Fortunately, I had a great audition and two call back auditions later- I booked the role!

BGG: I’m sure you were already a huge fan of the “Rush Hour” films, which one was your favorite?

JH: Rush Hour 2 is my favorite! That’s the one when they go to Hong Kong. Their characters were even more developed in that one, they were best friends by then, the comedy and action was in top form. I genuinely love all 3 of those films.

BGG: How will the TV series differ from the feature films? What can viewers expect?

JH: I think the TV series is a little younger and hipper than the movies. Chris Tucker was always hip, but you get a slightly younger vibe from us. Also, we try to make sure we’re bringing our own personalities to the characters- so we’re definitely not doing Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan impressions on the show.

BGG: Past or present, who gives you the greatest comedic inspiration?

JH: Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, and Chris Rock would have to be my top 3. After that, Chris Tucker, Dave Chappelle, Marlon Wayans, and Bernie Mac. Can you tell I’m a comedy nerd?

BGG: I know that being a young black male in Hollywood can be tough, what keeps you motivated?

JH: I’m a strong believer in “nothing is impossible.” So, I keep going until I accomplish the things many thought couldn’t be done. Every little bit of success I achieve, motivates me to accomplish something more. Also, my rent and car payment motivates me everyday.

BGG: Once the series premieres, are you prepared for the catapulting fame that’s sure to come?

JH: I believe I am. I’ve been acting professionally for 10 years. This will not be an overnight success story, even if people think it is. I’ve been through a lot in Hollywood and fortunately those things will help keep me not only grounded, but prepared for this potentially great next faze of my career.

BGG: Are you a social media fan? If so, who are some of your favorite people to follow? Why?

JH: I’m kind of a social media fan. I started out doing YouTube videos when I first moved to LA, then stopped periodically to focus on my stand-up and acting. However, some of my close friends are big on social media- King Bach, Alphonso McAuely, and Page Kennedy (also one of my cast members on “Rush Hour”) all have really funny content online.

BGG: Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?

JH: Having a fledging movie career. Also, producing other television shows. My goal is to create an urban “Judd Apatow” type camp for film and TV. I know several funny and talented actor/comedians who are stars and just need the right TV and film roles to showcase their talent. I would love to be the person to help initiate that. I’m a huge believer in reaching back to help others.

BGG: When you’re not filming, what do you like to do for fun?

JH: Do stand-up comedy, watch movies, and just spend time with my family. I’m a simple man.

Review: ‘Race’ Chronicles Jesse Owens’ Rise to Olympic Champion

Oftentimes I feel like the word “legend” is tossed around carelessly. Sure, there are some pretty awesome people who’ve impacted the world, however; not all are worthy of being called a “legend.” But when it comes to describing Olympic champion Jesse Owens, l can’t think of a more fitting title.

After viewing a screening of the new biopic, “Race,” based on Owens’ life, I learned just how much he earned that lauded recognition. Through his sacrifices, he helped pave the way for generations of African-American athletes. As the first black person to win four Olympic gold medals, his accomplishments were outstanding and established an amazing precedent, which the movie skillfully shows.

Focus Features’ Jesse Owens’ biopic, “Race,” starring Stephan James hit theaters nationwide Friday, February 19th.

Set in the 1930s, the film follows Owens’ rise to track-and-field star during very tumultuous times for race relations domestically and abroad (the Holocaust). Thankfully, the movie didn’t waste time showing viewers his childhood. It focused solely on the portion of his life that was relevant to the story, which was a four-year span—from his college training days straight to the 1936 Olympics.

Stephan James who stars as Owens does a phenomenal job portraying the Alabama native. I thought it was smart to cast a relatively unknown actor to play Owens for the sake of having a blank slate to build Owens’ character free from familiarity. His performance is also praise-worthy because he embodied the nature and competitive edge of a true athlete.

Jason Sudeikis, who played Larry Snyder, Owens’ hard-nosed, yet devoted coach/mentor/friend, also does a superb job. Despite them coming from two very different backgrounds, the film cleverly reveals their similarities—purposefully exposing our similarities as human beings. The two have great onscreen chemistry, which makes watching their scenes together (the majority of the movie!) enjoyable.

The fact that Owens participated in the Olympics, which was held in Berlin amid Adolf Hitler’s vision of Ayran supremacy is mind-blowing. It shows his bravery, tenacity and ultimate love of racing.

In addition to the entertaining plot that was Owens’ sports career, I found the costumes used throughout the film to be complete standouts. I honestly wanted to run out and purchase each of the chic and polished outfits worn by his wife, Ruth, played by Canadian actress Shanice Banton. From prim blouses to handsome, yet feminine hats, the costume director captured the era beautifully—making the period piece feel authentic.

Overall, the film is good. However, I wished that it delved a bit deeper into Owens as a person. While it did include insight into his love life, it didn’t fully reveal his true personality. I do appreciate the fact his adult children and estate played an integral role in the making of the film, providing credibility to the project. Again, it’s a good film and aptly released during Black History Month. If you’re interested in seeing an inspiring, triumphant film about one of the most fantastic athletes that ever lived, run to a theater near you!
