Product Review: Caress Forever Collection Body Washes

When it comes to cleansing, I’m all about body washes. It’s something about a rich lather that turns shower time into a relaxing experience for me.

That’s why I’m currently obsessed with Caress’ new line of cleansers. Launched last month, the Forever Collection is taking body washes to a new level. Available in two scents: Love Forever (a mix or dark berries and scarlet roses) and Adore Forever (a mix of vanilla, honey and roses), these cleansers are the first perfume-infused body washes to release a fragrance with every touch.

caress-forever-collectionCaress Forever Collection body washes available at drugstores and mass retailers nationwide, $3.99

Thanks to the technology of Caress Fragrance Release Pearls, skin is treated to a subtle scent that lasts well beyond the shower. I usually buy body washes that are more on the sweet side, but these floral notes are not overpowering and actually quite nice.

Aside from the refreshing long-lasting (up to 12 hours!) fragrance, the body washes thoroughly cleanse without drying out skin. Plus, the packaging is just so darn pretty. The sleek black bottle exudes a luxe feel that you typically don’t find with drugstore brands.

If body washes are your go-to cleansers, give these a try— you won’t be disappointed.

Jane Iredale Launches Country Weekend Collection for Spring

This winter I’ve been in desperate need of a getaway.

So when jane iredale—The Skin Care Makeup team invited me to leave the city to celebrate their upcoming spring launch, I jumped at the chance.

About 60 miles outside of New York City, we bloggers and editors were whisked away to the Bedford Post Inn in Bedford, NY for a beauty-ful evening. Owned by critically-acclaimed actor, Richard Gere, the renowned bed and breakfast was as  dreamy as a romantic movie set.

The location served as the perfect backdrop to showcase the mineral makeup brand’s beautiful new “Country Weekend” line. Comprised of a lip color, gel eyeliner and eye shadow kit of versatile shades—the new spring offerings are ideal for a soft and ultra-feminine look.

jane iredale “Country Weekend” Spring Collection available here, Getaway Palette ($58), Jelly Jar in Espresso ($28) and Just Kissed Forever Peach Lip & Cheek Stain ($25)

While I’m a huge fan of jane iredale’s Jelly Jars and eye shadow palettes, my favorite item from this particular collection is the Just Kissed Forever Peach Lip & Cheek Stain. Similar to mood makeup, the lip color customizes into a peachy pink shade based on your body’s unique chemistry. Admittedly, I was a bit apprehensive to see if it would actually complement and work for darker skin-tones for us BGs, but was pleasantly surprised. It gave me a peachy pink tint that was subtle, yet still eye-catching. Plus, it left my lips super moisturized without feeling greasy.

After learning and testing out the new products, we were treated to a hands-on pasta making demo conducted by Bedford Post Inn’s head chef, Michael White. Following the demo, we dined on a delicious three-course dinner coupled with some of the best wine I’d ever tasted.

Stuffed and happy, the evening had successfully satisfied my yearning for a mini-getaway. Now I’m just counting down the days for spring to finally arrive!

Did you have a getaway this winter? What makeup trends are you looking forward to trying this spring?

Crayola Brings Kids’ Creations to Life with Color Alive App

Like many adults my age, some of my fondest childhood memories involve drawing in coloring books—my have times changed.

Nowadays kids barely know what a crayon is because they’re so attached to their hand-held gadgets and high-tech devices.

Thanks to Crayola, kids can now combine the classic pastime of coloring with an innovative technological twist. Their new Color Alive coloring books (available in 4 different concepts including: Barbie, Enchanted Forest, Mythical Creations and Skylanders) and app (by DAQRI) is a mind-blowing interactive experience that turns colored creations into incredible animated 4-D drawings!

crayola-color-aliveCrayola Color Alive Coloring Books available here, $5.99 each

During a press preview hosted by The Moms last month, I was able to see first-hand how the app works. First, download the app on either Android or Apple devices. Then, have your child color the pages from one of the books using the crayons that come with the book (you can use regular crayons too). After your little one is done coloring, simply hover and scan the device over the page, touch the 4D button and watch the magic happen!

Your kids will be amazed to see their drawings come to life. For fun, they can even take selfies with their creations and store them in your device’s photo gallery.

color-alive-creatureMy daughter colored this little creature using the Color Alive app.

I’ve seen a lot of things, but I was super impressed by Color Alive. Plus, the book is under $10 and the app is free! It’s good to know that Crayola is keeping up with the times without compromising the brand’s mission—cultivating imagination!

Product Review: Get Happy Feet with the Emjoi Micro-Pedi

I don’t know about you, but this winter is wreaking havoc on my skin—from head to toe!

My face is certainly feeling the wrath of Old Man Winter, but my feet seem to be catching the most heat, er, brunt of it. Thank goodness for the  Emjoi MicroPedi!

Screen shot 2015-03-01 at 3.08.36 PM

Emjoi Micro-Pedi available at CVS, $29.99

This pampering little gadget has been a lifesaver for my soles. It scrapes off the toughest calluses effortlessly. The battery-operated rotating roller gently nicks away dry skin that’s hardened and thickened due to the lack of moisture. Remember, winter tends to strip our skin of its natural oils that keep it supple and soft. That’s why it’s important to keep skin adequately hydrated with moisturizing lotions and creams during cold-weather months.  But, let’s get back to the MicroPedi…

While it might be tempting to firmly press it against stubborn calluses, don’t try it. The device is smartly designed to slough away dead skin easily without having to put forth much effort. If you press too firmly, it could potentially damage your skin or cause the device to malfunction.

I’ve been using it  right after I get out the shower when my skin is supple. But, I make sure that my feet are thoroughly dried before using the MicroPedi, as the directions suggest. After a few rolls back and forth, my feet are left feeling smooth and super soft. I wish there was a compartment to catch the dead skin for easy disposal, but a thorough rinse cleans it off too. Plus, it also comes with two rollers for added use.

So, if you are looking to give your feet some  much needed TLC, stop by your local CVS and pick one up. Trust me, your feet will thank you!

What do you use to get rid of ugly calluses during the winter?

Oscar Hair: Get Lupita Nyong’o’s Look in 5 Simple Steps

Lupita Nyong’o looked absolutely lovely at last night’s Oscars.

The Academy-award winning actress stunned in an eye-catching pearl-embroidered cream Calvin Klein gown that flattered her figure and complemented her beautiful complexion. While her dress was nothing short of show-stopping, it was her natural hair that really pulled her ensemble together.

Celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims created the star’s winning coif. Instead of giving her an out-of-the box look, he opted for a more traditional style. “We went for a classic, more rounded look that played off the pearls and texture of her dress, avoiding asymmetric, angular lines and edges,” he said.

If you’re a fellow naturalista rocking a tight crop and want to copy Lupita’s sophisticated look, Sims shares how he achieved the style with the help of Smooth ‘N Shine products in a few simple steps.

Check them out below:
1. Dampen hair with a warm towel to soften the texture
2. Apply Smooth ‘N Shine Smooth Olive & Tea Tree RevivOil Wrap & Set Mousse paired with Smooth ‘N Shine Argan Power 10 Styling Gel to create tiny ringlets with a small rattail comb throughout the whole head, starting at the nape of neck and moving to the front
3. Attached hooded dryer for 30 minutes or until hair is dry
4. Once completely dry, take a large tooth bone comb and lift the ringlets to break up the texture for added volume
5. Liberally spray Smooth ‘N Shine Instant Repair Spray-On Polisher for added shine and smooth out any fly-aways and frizzies

Twitter Contest: CVS Wants to Know Your #BeautySecret

It’s no secret that we all have a few beauty secrets that we swear by. Throughout the month of February, CVS Beauty Club wants to know what’s your hush-hush trick to looking lovely?

Being raised in a house with my mom and two older sisters, I learned quite a few beauty hacks that I’ve since adopted. But, I actually discovered my all-time favorite tip on my own. Before I had kids, I traveled A LOT. I was in and out of airports quite frequently. That said, one day in the airport bathroom I looked in the mirror and my face looked like an oil slick! I didn’t have any blotting papers so I opted for the next best thing—toilet seat covers!

cvs-beauty-secret

Yep, it may sound a bit gross, but trust me they work like a charm. Just be sure to grab a few from the back to ensure cleanliness. They’re thin and super absorbent! Plus, just like real blotting papers they remove excess oil without ruining your makeup.

So when I’m out and about and need to de-shine, these are my go-to!  You can even purchase them at office supply stores for a much better value than official makeup blotting papers.

One other tip that I do is that I always use a liquid liner like Maybelline’s Eye Studio for my upper lids for a perfect cat eye, but for my bottom lids I use colored eyeliners like a deep plum or a dark forest green for an unexpected pop that looks almost black, but wit.

Exclusive Interview: Actress Tasha Smith Dishes on Zane Books, Friendship & ‘Empire’

Tasha Smith is the kind of actress whose roles are so infectiously relatable that she instantly becomes that “friend in your head.”

For over 20 years, Smith, 43, has been gracing our big and small screens. I first remember seeing her serve as Tyra Banks’ friend and go-to acting coach on the reality modeling competition show, “America’s Next Top Model.” I recall watching her give the aspiring models a crash course in acting with funny, over-the-top antics that made her memorable.

Tasha-Smith-Pic

Since then, Smith has gone on to become one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood. She’s played roles in several Tyler Perry productions including “Daddy’s Little Girls, “Why Did I Get Married,” its sequel and current spin-off television series, “For Better Or Worse,” plus a host of other movies and TV shows.

Smith’s big personality, quick wit and humor often translate into her roles, but not all the time. In fact, the New Jersey native showed a more subdued, serious side as psychotherapist “Dr. Marcella Spencer,” in last year’s steamy feature film, “Addicted.”

ADDICTED_dvd_ocard_skew[5]

“Addicted” is currently available on DVD here.

Now, in a recurring role on Fox’s breakout hit, “Empire,” Smith is continuing to show viewers that she’s an actress who can take on just about any character—well, she is an acting coach after all!

I recently caught up with the actress where she talked about Zane’s erotic books, why “Empire” is the modern day “Martin,” friendship and more!

Check out the Q&A below:

BGG: You’ve played so many roles in your career. What character did you learn the most from playing?
Tasha Smith: That’s a great question. A long time ago I had done a Jerry Bruckheimer TV movie where I played an astronaut stuck out of space. We thought we were going to die. That was before a lot of the comedy stuff I had done came out. I learned a lot. My character had a son and was married and lived with the fear of never seeing her family again. Her fight to survive was really important. At that point in my life, I wasn’t really honest about fear. You might meet people who say they don’t have any fears because they have faith. But, I believe that all of us have some kind of fear. I learned a lot discovering the fears of that character. It was a wonderful learning experience for me.

BGG: Who was your biggest inspiration for becoming an actress?
TS: I have to really go back to my best friend. I have people who inspire me now, but when I was young with a dream at 15 years old I met who is my best friend to this day, Tisha Campbell-Martin. We have been best friends since we were 15. I’m the godmother of her youngest son, Ezekial. She had come to Camden, NJ with a guy she was dating. At the time I was just a girl from Camden, so to meet her was very inspiring. She was the hotness, honey! That was Tisha Campbell, baby! She inspired me and taught me about integrity, character, work ethic, professionalism and how to behave on the set, etc. When I moved to California and Tisha got “Martin,” I also worked as her assistant. Through that time I really learned a lot.

BGG: Prior to landing the role as Dr. Marcella Spencer in “Addicted,” were you a fan of Zane erotic novels?
TS: Listen, first of all Zane’s books…let me stop! (laughing) I was very familiar with her as an author. I wasn’t one to sit and read her books all the time because I went through this time in my life where I was celibate and reading Zane’s books was not helping me to do that! All you want to do is have sex after reading Zane books!

BGG: I know that you’ve spoken openly about being a Christian, does your faith ever conflict with roles you’re approached to play?
TS: Absolutely not! I’m an actor and I can’t judge characters based on my spirituality and how I choose to believe in God. To me, whatever your choice of spirituality is, it’s your personal choice. I may play a character that doesn’t believe in God at all. It doesn’t interfere at all because I believe in God and thank Him for having a connection.

BGG: While watching Oprah’s Selma special last month, I noticed that you were in attendance. What was that experience like?
TS: It was one of the best, most beautiful experiences of my life. That lady (Oprah) knows how to throw party! I had a chance to meet Berry Gordy and sit down and talk to Smokey Robinson who was just divine.

BGG: You’re now on the hit Fox show, “Empire,” were you at all surprised by the positive response it’s been getting?
TS: I am so happy and grateful to be a part of that movement because it is truly a movement. You know when something is greater than you can imagine? I think “Empire” is bigger than anything we ever imagined. I don’t think anyone knew just how infectious it was going to be. It’s like the best thing on TV since “Martin.” Remember when “Martin” first came out and we were all addicted to it back in the day? Every time Martin did a taping, every celebrity wanted to go to it. That was like the thing to do. Every basketball team, every actress, every singer, everybody was addicted to “Martin!” To me, “Empire” is even better than that. I think everybody is addicted to Lucious and Cookie!

BGG: What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without?
TS: I have to have NaturaBissé Diamond Cream. It’s a little bourgeois, it’s a little expensive, but I can’t live without it! It’s a moisturizer for the face and it’s just incredible.

“Empire,” airs on Fox Wednesdays at 9pm EST.

Get Eczema Relief with Aveeno Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream

Being a beauty editor and blogger for nearly a decade, I’ve tried countless moisturizing creams and various lotions, but Aveeno continues to be the overall best for me and my family.

Since my son and I both suffer from eczema, Aveeno has been my go-to for soothing our problematic skin. I’ve been using Aveeno Active Naturals Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Lotion on me and the baby formulated version on him for a little over a year. Both of the colloidal oatmeal-based moisturizers hydrates while calming our dry, itchy and irritated skin.

Not only does it soothe, it also prevents the recurrence of  dry skin by acting as a protectant and barrier. Now that we’re well into winter, I’ve been slathering it on even more since this time of year is when our eczema flare ups are more frequent.

aveeno-eczema

Aveeno Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream available here, starting at $9.99

Like most moms, I am very particular and careful when it comes to what products I use on my children. But I feel confident using Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturizing on my son because it isn’t made with harsh chemicals or packed with ingredients that I can barely pronounce. Plus, it’s completely steroid and fragrance free, which of course scores points in my book.

Don’t just go on my word, this cream is clinically proven to reduce the flaking, itching and irritation associated with eczema. If you suffer from the skin condition, definitely give Aveeno’s entire eczema line a try. Trust me, your skin will thank you.

Do you suffer from eczema? What do you use to help treat it?

Super Bowl Prep: Weber Grill Launches New Colors for Q 1200 Series

If you’re gearing up for the big game this Sunday, be sure to get the grill ready!

Although it’s not exactly backyard BBQ weather, Weber Grill’s Q 1200 portable gas grills are still perfect for tailgates and Super Bowl parties. Plus, they’re now available in a variety of vibrant colors (fuchsia, orange, green, blue and purple) so you can cook in style.

Weber Grill Q 1200 Series available here, $200

I recently got an up close and personal rundown of all the bells and whistles this grill provides.  Its light-weight, cute and compact design makes it ideal for small spaces. But don’t let the convenience of it fool you—it’s still a heavy-duty grill. The stainless steel burner and electronic ignition system makes grilling easy.

weber

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Weber Grill Q 1200 press launch showcasing their new color offerings at Crave Fish Bar in NYC.

I’ve never grilled before, but the pretty fuchsia and purple colors coupled with the simplicity of this grill motivates me to give it a whirl. Who knows, I just may become my family’s favorite grill master!

Check out these 5 cold-weather grilling tips from Weber:

*    Plan on adding 5-10 minutes to the normal time it takes to preheat your grill in the warmer months.

*     Just because it’s cold outside, never grill in an enclosed space that can trap deadly carbon monoxide, like   inside a garage or under an over-hang.

*     Resist the urge to lift the lid. Repeatedly opening the grill will allow precious heat to escape, ultimately increasing your grilling time.

*     Use a thermometer to measure the internal temperature of foods to ensure perfectly cooked results every time.

*     Snow gloves are not barbecue gloves. Make sure you have on heat-resistant gloves when operating your grill.
