Must-See TV: Queen Latifah’s New Daytime Talk Show Premieres Today!

Back in 2011 when I interviewed Queen Latifah, I didn’ think it was humanly possible for the her to add one more job to her resume. Boy was I wrong!

The multi-talented entertainer, 43,  is not only back with a brand new daytime talk show debuting today (check your local listings for times), but she’s also recently been named the new face of Pantene’s popular Relaxed & Natural haircare brand. Already a Grammy-award winning rapper/singer, Oscar-nominated actress, host, author, film/TV/web producer, and CoverGirl, Latifah is quickly becoming the queen of all entertainment.

Kerry Washington Graces Glamour

Attention all gladiators!

One of our favorite BGs, Kerry Washington, is gracing the October issue of Glamour. The newlywed and star of ABC’s runaway hit, “Scandal,” looks nothing less than stunning on the cover of the popular glossy. Photographed by Peggy Sirota, Washington beams with radiance while wearing some of the season’s hottest fashions.

In the issue, the Bronx-born beauty chats it up with Glamour’s editor-in-chief, Cindi Leive to discuss balancing her many hats: wife, actress, political activist, and more!

Check out this excerpt:

CINDI LEIVE: You’re so close to your parents. Were they OK with your career choice?
KERRY WASHINGTON: When I said that this is what I wanted to do, my mother literally cried. She didn’t want me to experience all that rejection. They both would have preferred me to have been a lawyer.… [After college] I gave myself a year to make it in acting and was living in my parents’ house teaching beginner’s yoga when I got my first part, in Our Song. Then I got Save the Last Dance.… Now they’re really behind me. And I’m always working. My cousins call me the longshoreman of actors.

CL: [Laughs.] I want to ask about fashion too. At what point did it start to be fun, or is it still kind of something you do because it’s part of the job?
KW: It started out as, like, Good-Student Kerry. OK, I’m going to admit this: There were a couple of actresses whom I felt were having the upper hand careerwise—because they knew how to work that red carpet. I was like, “I’m missing a really important tool. If I am the CEO of the Kerry Washington Corporation, my marketing department is really lax.” So I sort of developed a new character: Red-Carpet Kerry

Kerry-Washington-1

CL: I love that.

KW: And I researched her like any other character. I actually called Tracee Ellis Ross [the actress and Diana Ross’s daughter], who’s a good friend, and literally asked, “How do you pronounce Hermès?” Red-Carpet Kerry needed to know.

CL: The longshoreman kicked in.

KW: Exactly. The professor’s daughter kicked in. I was doing library hours on fashion. And then it happened—I was in love.

CL: And the fashion on Scandal is a whole other story. All that white! Did that come from you?
KW: From me and the costume designer Lyn Paolo. And the pants—that Olivia wears pants—that was mine, because I really wanted her to wear the pants in that relationship.

CL: I’ve heard that people have been walking into Prada and asking for the Olivia Pope purse.
KW: And Movado for the Olivia Pope watch. My mother was like, “I think I want an Olivia Pope watch for Mother’s Day.”

CL: Your mom is shopping off “Scandal?” I think your parents are officially OK with your job. So what’s in the Prada bag?
KW: [Laughs.] Usually folders, pens, the phone on the show, and often a bottle of water to add a nice weight to the bag. And some panties in one episode!

CL: I love the whole idea of “gladiators” [Olivia’s term for her employees and, now, what fans of the show call themselves.] So who are your gladiators?
KW: My closest girlfriends from college, and I’m really close to the girls on the show. It’s a sisterhood.… That’s the big thing that really differentiates me from Olivia: She compartmentalizes her relationships. I really try to let my friends into all of my life. They know that Red-Carpet Kerry is a version of Kerry, and they know that DNC Speaker Kerry is me.

CL: OK, so relationships. In interview after interview, you always use the samephrase: “I don’t talk about my personal life.” I’m curious about the discipline that it requires to be so tight-lipped.
KW: I learned through experience that it doesn’t work for me to talk about my personal life. I’ve had earlier times in my career when I did talk about it. I was on the cover of a bridal magazine [InStyle Weddings, in 2005, when Washington was engaged to actor David Moscow]. But I couldn’t just turn around and say, “I only want to talk about the good stuff, but not the bad stuff.” So I just thought, “OK, no more.”

Kerry-Washington-2

CL: You even managed to get married in June without anyone knowing.
KW: Absolutely! I’m walking around in the world with my ring. And when people say congratulations, I say thank you. But I’m going to continue to not talk about it and just let it unfold.

CL: It must have been satisfying to pull off a wedding with no press around.
KW: [Laughs.]I don’t want to sound smug about it…but the point is to do what’s best for me. I have girlfriends in this business who talk about their personal lives, and it works for them, and I love it. But not for me.

‘Doc McStuffins’ Is Back with a Second Season and Takes the Show On the Road!

There’s good news for all of the  “Doc McStuffins‘” fans in your life, the hit animated Disney series is coming back for a second season with brand new shows starting Friday, September 6.

If you don’t have a child (2-7) in the house, you may not be familiar with the show, but you should be!  It’s a groundbreaking cartoon that features a cute little brown girl named “Doc” who emulates her mother (who is a doctor) by caring for and fixing her broken and ailing toys.

Doc-McStuffins

“Doc McStuffins” season two premieres, Friday, Sept. 6 on DisneyJunior.

My daughter, Ava, has been a fan of the series since its premiere last year. It’s such a refreshing show because it entertains children while teaching them the importance of being healthy. Plus, it helps take the fear out of visiting the doctor and gives them aspirations beyond being a pretty princess.

For the past few weeks the show has gone on the road. Last month, the “Doc Mobile” kicked off a multi-city tour in Boston. Themed “So Much You Can Do…to Take Car of You,” the 27-foot custom-made trailer houses a fun and interactive experience for all of the mini doctors-in-training. In addition, there is an opportunity for parents and children to  meet real-life female African-American doctors from the organization, Artemis Medical Society.

I took Ava during their stop here in NYC and she enjoyed it! If you can catch the tour, it’s definitely worth checking out!

Get the Perfect Red Lip Now: Skinn Hollywood Red Lip Palette

With fall right around the corner, it’s time to switch up your beauty routine!

Rocking a red lip color is a simple yet dramatic way to embrace the new season. I’ve tried countless scarlet shades, but have yet to find the perfect color that truly complements my skin tone. Not even the popular BG fave ‘Ruby Woo‘ by MAC looks good on me.

That’s why I’m excited to share with you guys a lip palette by Skinn Cosmetics that does the job. Created by professional makeup artist Dimitri James, the Hollywood Red Lip Palette includes a variety of six red shades that can be worn alone or blended into a custom crimson. With colors ranging from strawberry pink to a juicy reddish grape, you’re bound to find or create a red that’s right for you.

The only downside to this palette is that it doesn’t provide a single matte finish that’s all the rage this season. Other than that one hiccup, it’s a must-buy for fall.

Hair Must-Have: Carol’s Daughter’s NEW Monoi Anti-Breakage Spray!

Since I’ll be a mom of two soon, I’ve been making it my priority to attend more beauty and style events while I still can.

Last week, I had the pleasure of spending the evening with the lovely Lisa Price, founder of Carol’s Daughter. About 15 of us writers/bloggers were treated to a fun mixology presentation (of course I couldn’t indulge!) of what I’m sure were delicious libations from mixologist Benjamin Wood at Distilled (they have some of the best wings I’ve ever had!!) here in New York.

Lisa-Price

Prior to sipping signature cocktails (mocktails for me) and noshing on scrumptious bites, Lisa told us about her newest product: Monoi Anti-Breakage Spray.

Anti-Breakage SprayMonoi Repairing Anti-Breakage Spray available here, $24

She informed us that this particular spray sold over 700 units in a matter of minutes during one of her recent appearances on QVC, and after trying it myself I know why. The lightweight elixir comprised of a recipe that requires soaking of gardenias combined with coconut oil and wheat protein detangles hair gently and efficiently. Due to its special formula, you have to shake well in order to activate the natural ingredients. It’s an ideal leave-in conditioner because it doesn’t stop protecting and strengthening your strands.

Because I’m expecting, my hair doesn’t shed as much, but I did notice that after using it I didn’t have as much hair loss after washing. I’m excited to see how it works once my hormones go back to normal because I suffer from intense tangles and shedding.

If your hair is like most women’s while wet, this is a must-have product to tackle tangles and prevent breakage. Once again, Carol’s Daughter addresses our hair needs!

What products do you use for detangling?

New Addition Coming to BGG!

For those who don’t follow me on Instagram (@browngirlgumbo), I just wanted to share some exciting news with you: I’m expecting my second child!

Yep, Ava is going to be a big sister and she couldn’t be happier. In fact, we’re all excited in the BGG household. It seems just like yesterday when I announced that I was expecting my first child on the site four years ago! Parenting is definitely the hardest job I’ve ever had, but it’s by far the most satisfying and rewarding. However, this time around I’ve been much sicker and unable to post as frequently as I’d like, but I’ve since passed that hurdle. Now, I can’t wait for our new addition and am counting down the days.

Last Saturday, I had a small “sprinkle” (that’s what people are calling subsequent baby showers these days) in my backyard in Brooklyn. A few of my friends and family members were in attendance to celebrate our impending arrival. My dear friends over at Aveeno were kind enough to sponsor the gift bags for my guests, which included a daily moisturizer and my favorite sunscreen. It was a lovely occasion and I’m so grateful to have wonderful people in my life.

Surprisingly, in this day and age of creating digital memories, I didn’t take many pictures. Luckily, I was able to salvage a collage out of the few photos I did manage to snap. Check it out below:

I never thought that I’d be anxiously awaiting the end of summer, but this year I am and for great reason! 🙂

Go “Nuts” for The Body Shop’s Brazil Nut Body Care Line

I don’t know about you, but I’m quite a nutty girl!

I’ve always been a lover of a nutty ice creams, sweet treats or a simple handful of mixed nuts as a snack. Basically, anything with nuts as a main ingredient count me in. And that apparently applies to body butters and shower gels too!

The Body Shop has a new and improved line of Brazil nut-infused body care products that is ahh-mazing! Brazils are one of my favorite nuts so I was interested in seeing how they would translate into a luxe lotion or body wash. The alluring sweet and nutty scent caresses the senses like only The Body Shop products can. The soap-free shower cream soothes and cleanses the skin with a rich lather that leaves you feeling refreshed and ready for the day. The body butter soaks into skin like a richer and more moisturizing shea butter. While the 3-in-1 beautifying oil provides skin with a light sheen that isn’t too oily but keeps skin glowing and  moisturized for hours! I haven’t quite figured out how it can be used for the face, but a few drops does wonders for my super dry hair. Plus, all of the products are environmentally friendly and are made with Community Fair Trade Brazil nut oil from nuts hand-harvested in Peru.

If you’re looking to take a break from the usual floral and fruity scents that most body care companies offer, opt for this nutty line of products!
