Review: ‘Blue Man Group’ is Unspeakable Fun

When you think of Blue Man Group, you envision a few bald guys covered in blue paint with intense piercing eyes, right? Well, that’s true—but, there’s so much more to the award-winning show.

A unique blend of comedy, art, music, and technology, Blue Man Group has thrilled audiences for decades—without saying a word. In fact, I’ve wanted to see the unique ensemble since my high school days, but never did. My wait ended a couple weeks ago when I finally got to see if the show created by three guys (Chris Wink, Phil Stanton, and Matt Goldman) fresh out of college, was worth the hype. It was.

My family and I were mesmerized by the show, which has an ongoing run at Briar Street Theatre in Chicago. Simply put, Blue Man Group is one of the most unpredictable, quirkiest and unconventional shows I’ve ever seen. If you tend to nod off or lose interest during live performances, you’re in luck. This show is incredibly interactive and engages all of your senses. From the hard-hitting drums to the awe-inspiring tricks and stunts, the show is a rollercoaster ride of entertainment for people of all ages.

The secret to their long-running success? The power of non-verbal human connection and endless creativity.

Although Blue Man Group started in 1991, the act remains fresh with new stories, custom instruments and innovative technological advances to keep theatergoers curious and surprised.

For example, this particular performance made subtle references to society’s addiction to social media and how it’s impacting real human connections. While they touched on this serious subject, the show remained lighthearted and fun throughout. My kids were completely enamored by the production and couldn’t stop talking about it on the ride home.

With its countless outlandish antics, the show isn’t like anything you’ve ever seen! But don’t take my word for it. Join 35 million others and go see this global phenomenon—I guarantee you won’t regret it. Blue Man Group currently has domestic residencies in New York, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas and Orlando and an international residency in Berlin.

Review: ‘Dog Man: The Musical’ Takes a Bite Out of Off-Broadway

If you have kids between the ages of 6 and 10, chances are you’re pretty familiar with Dav Pilkey’s popular comic book series, “Dog Man.” Both of my children are fans of the book’s half-policeman, half-dog crime-fighting hero. In fact, my 9-year-old daughter has read all the books (the latest installment in the series comes out August 13th!) while my 5-year-old enjoys drawing the lovable man-canine. So, you can imagine their delight when I told them they would get to see the character brought to life on stage thanks to the new theatrical adaptation: Dog Man: The Musical.

To say they were ecstatic would be an understatement.

dog-man-the-musical

My two kids posing after enjoying “Dog Man: The Musical” at Lucille Lortell Theatre on July 4th, 2019.

The hilarious 90-minute production takes young viewers on a fun, adventurous ride as Dog Man (who’s a result of an experiment gone wrong) tries to save the city from an evil robotic fish named Flippy and an intimidating trio of villainous buildings. The lively, energetic and incredibly talented cast is simply captivating. The entertaining ensemble includes L.R. Davidson as Li’l Petey, Jamie Laverdiere as Petey, Brian Owen as Dog Man, Dan Rosales as Harold, Crystal Sha’nae as Flippy, and Forest Vandyke as George. This gifted group didn’t miss a beat and brought endless enthusiasm to their characters.

Plus, the live performance takes scenes straight from the pages of the best-selling books, adding an element of familiarity that young audiences can appreciate.

Days leading up to the show, my daughter re-read some excerpts from the books to my son so they could both get reacquainted with the plots and themes. When she saw them re-enacted on stage, she gave me a huge smile and said, “See, mommy, some parts are just like the book!”

Not only was the storytelling great, the music was phenomenal. The catchy songs were a major hit with my kids. They especially loved the “Evil ABC’s” rendition performed, by Petey the Cat, Dog Man’s main nemesis and his adorable offspring L’il Petey. During our walk home they were still humming the amusing show tunes.

From beginning to end, the comedy, singing, and impeccable set design made for a memorable experience that my kids won’t soon forget.

“Dog Man: The Musical” is currently showing at Lucille Lortell Theatre and runs through August 11, 2019. Be sure to visit TheaterWorks USA for tickets and more information.

REVIEW: Let Measure & Made Upgrade Your Jean Game

If you have a hard time finding the perfect pair of jeans, you’re not alone.

It’s no secret that many women of all backgrounds and body types have trouble snagging jeans that fit in all the right places.

Well, thanks to Measure & Made, a women’s fashion brand that specializes in custom-like fits, your never-ending jean-shopping search might be over.

measureandmade

I recently attended a press event where I learned all about the innovative brand and their knack for designing nearly tailor-made denim duds. For starters, the jeans are powered by FITLOGIC®, a unique patented sizing system that identifies your size and shape based off a two-number decimal system. To put it simply, a short and easy quiz calculates the best fit based off your answers. For example, do you tend to gain weight all over or more in your midsection? Questions like these help the FITLOGIC ® system formulate a personalized fit.

measureandmadejeans

Measure & Made jeans are available in variety of styles and rinses. Prices start at $79.

For someone who has difficulty finding jeans that fit in the waist while snuggly complementing my curves, I was beyond excited to give these jeans a try. Let me just say, I’ve never had jeans that accentuated my waist like these.

measureandmadejeans

Unlike so many of my other jeans, there was no nagging gap in the back. This skinny style cinched my waist, hugged my behind and even gave my bum a bit of a lift. I loved the rinse, fit and overall style of these jeans. Plus, they’re comfortable and don’t feel constricting at all. Looks like my hunt for figure-flattering jeans has finally ended!

If you’re tired of the same run-of-the mill, ill-fitting jeans, Measure & Made just might be your perfect match!

What’s your favorite jean style: skinny, straight, boyfriend, wide-legged or distressed?

Who doesn’t enjoy museums? They’re always chock-full of exhibits with interesting relics and captivating nuggets that make you stop, think and reflect. The Museum of the African Diaspora is no different. As an avid lover of African-American history, this gem puts Black art on full display. With shows that speak to our culture in America and beyond, the museum is a true testament to our talent and unyielding perseverance. During my visit, I checked out famous paintings, intriguing sculptures and walked away with a wealth of newfound knowledge.

Onsen Bath & Restaurant
After a nearly 6-hour cross-country flight, I was ready to unwind upon my arrival. My first stop after settling into my hotel was taking a dip at Onsen, a hidden Japanese bathing house/restaurant. Unfamiliar with onsens? Don’t worry, I was too. Basically, the word describes hot springs in Japan, but also lends itself to bathing facilities. In this case, it’s essentially a communal hot tub, ideal for decompressing. This particular onsen also has a sauna and steam room, which was a pleasant surprise. Plus, it also offers relaxing treatments and soothing massages to melt your stress away. While I didn’t indulge in dining, the restaurant portion of the space serves a wide range of Japanese favorites.

When it comes to satisfying my sweet tooth, fortune cookies are my fave. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always enjoyed the crispy, wafer-like cookies after a Chinese meal (and without a Chinese meal). That’s why I had to make my way to the famous Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory. Located in the city’s Chinatown area, the unassuming factory is tucked away in an alleyway that’s easy to pass up if you’re not paying attention. Once inside, you won’t need a fortune to predict the delight. Visitors can watch fresh cookies being made and even sample different flavors. And of course, you can purchase some for the road.

Everywhere you look, everywhere you look… (singing)
If you’re not familiar with “Full House,” then stop reading. Ok, keep reading, but if you’re not feeling nostalgic after singing that catchy theme song in your head, we can’t be friends. If you’re like most Americans and recall the popular ‘80s/‘90s sitcom, chances are you’ll recognize the Painted Ladies. While the name may not ring a bell, that’s what the pastel-colored, Victorian and Edwardian houses during the show’s opening credits are called. With a trek to Alamo Square, you can get an up-close-and-personal look at the park and pretty homes the Tanners gleefully picnicked in front of.

Nothing says San Francisco quite like the Golden Gate Bridge. The reddish (which is actually orange) structure is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. ‘Pip’s Island’ Puts Your Child in the Center of a Unique Immersive Adventure + Q&A with Co-Creator Rania Ajami

Family entertainment is changing. Immersive experiences are taking hold and Pip’s Island is a prime example of where engaging, interactive fun for children is heading. Located steps from Times Square in New York City, the sprawling multi-level space is the perfect spot to embark on the incredibly unique journey.

The hour-long adventure is a one-of-a-kind hybrid performance that successfully blends powerful storytelling, digital gadgetry, animation, captivating space design and music into one unforgettable theatrical experience. From dance breaks to puppetry to problem-solving scenarios, the innovative production puts your child (ages 10 and under) in the center of it all.

pips-island-browngirlgumbo

Tiny explorers are sent on a heroic quest to save the island from an evil villain, with obstacles at every turn. Led by an effervescent park ranger and Pip — the show’s central character — the mini explorers encounter a wondrous cast of personalities.

While kids are the main attractions, accompanying adults are far from left out. In fact, we’re referred to as the assistant explorers. With a little help from us here and there, the kids walk through several scenes with various activities that ladder up to five empowering pillars: activate, investigate, build, imagine and connect. Each of the experiences has a teachable moment that resonates with children. Throughout the mission, the mini explorers are called by name (thanks to the handy nametags) to assist with tasks. This is a nice touch that parents will appreciate because it creates a sense of belonging and personalization within a group setting.

To say my kids (ages 5 and 9) loved the experience would be an understatement. My son, Marcus, was tasked with the job of carrying the treasured handbook throughout the experience. Let’s just say he took his responsibility very seriously! My daughter enjoyed steering the ship in one setup, as well as the enthralling storytelling and eye-catching details of each design space.

As a mom who’s always on the hunt for fun family activities to do in the city, Pip’s Island tops my list of recommendations. If you’re looking for a memorable, unique and entertaining way to unlock your child’s imagination, this is it!

pips-island-nyc

I recently caught up with Rania Ajami, one of the co-founders behind this fascinating venture. Read on to learn more about what sparked the creation of Pip’s Island and what visitors can expect.

BGG: What was your inspiration behind creating Pip’s Island?
Rania Ajami: Being a mother was my greatest inspiration. Plus, my background is in filmmaking and storytelling. It was just having my own kids and seeing that there’s really nothing out there that was enriching and unique for children. I was also frustrated by the fact that I’d have to book a lesson or schedule something. There weren’t many options outside of the usual offerings of the museum, etc.

BGG: What was your mindset when conceptualizing the brand?
RA: We wanted to create a children’s brand where any child would feel that it’s enriching. In fact, there are children that sometimes they show up and they’re timid or they’re scared, but when they go through the entirety of the journey, they come out feeling so happy about themselves. We’re really about making kids feel like heroes.

pips-island-nyc

BGG: What can visitors expect when exploring Pip’s Island?
RA:  It’s a true hero’s journey for children where they are part of the entire unfolding of the story. From the moment they enter our submersive world upstairs, they move through these very rich multi-sensorial environments. They are met by actors who are different characters from our world. And from the get-go they’re given a mission to save the island. In every room you have a task, the story unfolds, and you really become wrapped up in the world and journey. We’ve had children walk out and say that it felt like they had walked into a book.

BGG: We know that it’s an interactive, immersive experience for kids, but how do adults factor into the experience and what can they expect?
RA: The emphasis is really on the kids, but the design, music and the script are also done in a way that grownups enjoy it. There’s humor that grownups get that the kids don’t. We want it to feel entertaining, like a Pixar movie for everyone.

BGG: How would you describe Pip’s Island in three words?
RA: Wonder, empowerment, and magic.

pips-island-nyc-review

BGG: How did you come up with the name Pip’s Island? Is there any significance, background or history connected to that name?
RA: For us, Pip is the hero of the story. Ultimately, only he can defeat the bad guy. But the idea of Pip came many years ago when we were thinking of something that represented new life. So, that’s where we came up with this boy’s name being Pip. Sort of the beginning of this island, life and nature.

BGG: What surprised you the most when creating Pip’s Island? Was there anything that surprised you that you weren’t expecting?
RA:  The empowerment element was the most surprising. When we first started we didn’t realize that kids would come out feeling as if they found this inner power. When we saw that in our very first workshop, we thought, ‘Wow that’s the key to this!’ So, we began thinking about how to nurture that. How do we bring that about in children? How do we make them feel like they’re part of this expedition and that they’re working with other kids? Everything we’re doing serves this idea that children are the heroes, the stars of the show.

BGG: Why did you choose Times Square for the location?
RA: After I graduated from college, I moved to New York where I earned my master’s degree in film at NYU. After that, I started working as a filmmaker in the downtown theater scene. So, my community of collaborators are here in New York. Again, as a mom living in New York, I was privy to what the city offered for kids. As for the Time Square location, it was almost by chance. It just happened to be a property that was large enough. And the landlord believes in what we’re doing. It just kind of all magically came together.

pips-island-nyc-review

BGG: What’s the biggest takeaway you want visitors to have upon leaving Pip’s Island?
RA: We want kids to realize that they all have an inner star, unmatched power and amazing potential. We want them to know that they can come back again and again. It isn’t just a show that you just go and see once. The whole idea is that there are many adventures that will constantly change. We want people to know that we’re a children’s brand that offers so much more than just seeing a one-time show.

BGG: What’s next for Pip’s Island?
RA: One thing we’ve been developing alongside the experience is this very large mythological world. Right now we’re working on a comic book and other books. The idea is that kids will come back and there will be different adventures that they’ll go on during their visit to the island.

Pip’s Island is located 400 W. 42nd Street, New York, NY. Visit Pip’s Island for tickets and more information.

Have you ever visited Pip’s Island? How do you keep your kids engaged and entertained beyond a typical trip to the movies or museum?

‘Dog Man’ Book Series is Being Developed into a Musical

Ever heard of a half-dog, half-policeman? I hadn’t neither. That’s until my 9-year-old daughter became obsessed with the Dog Man comic book last year.

Now, the best-selling series about a part-dog, part-policeman is being developed into a stage production. “Dog Man: The Musical” is slated to open this summer in partnership with TheaterWorks USA.

Created by Dav Pilkey, the mind behind Captain Underpants, the book centers around a crime-fighting dog who enjoys taking a bite out of furniture in his spare time. Pretty wacky, right? Well, the series has sold more than 23 million copies and children and critics alike are major fans. The musical adaptation will be just as fascinating as the series and take theatergoers on an adventurous ride sure to satisfy their wacky fervor for the crime-fighting canine. It beings performances at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York City June 28th and runs through August 4, 2019.

Dog-Man-the-Musical

The show is written by Kevin Del Aguila and Brad Alexander, veteran children’s programming collaborators who’ve worked on PBS’s “Peg + Cat” and the upcoming “Clifford The Big Read Dog” on PBS and Amazon.

If your kids are Dog Man fans, they’re in for a treat when the heroic character comes to life on stage. And, even if they’re not, they will be after this TheaterWorks USA production.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here.

Are you kids familiar with the “Dog Man” book series?

Palmer’s Purifying Sheet Mask is My Skin’s New Best Friend

Who doesn’t want smooth, flawless skin?

For me, it’s the ultimate beauty goal. Clear, blemish-free skin gives me the confidence to face the day. When my skin isn’t up to par, it dims my mood and hardly anything can turn it around. That’s why I do my best to keep my face in tip-top shape.

However, despite my diligent skincare regimen, breakouts seem to be the new norm for me. Thankfully, Palmer’s Purifying Sheet Mask has been a lifesaver. It soothes my temperamental skin giving it an undeniable glow. Not only does it make my skin shine (in a good way), it shrinks my large pores, which prevents clogging and excess oil buildup, a breeding ground for acne. When visible pores vanish, it creates a vibrant, even complexion.

Infused with a botanical-based blend of natural charcoal, willowbark, and marshmallow, this calming mask packs a major bang for your buck. Plus, it’s just so relaxing! Pampering yourself is key to a healthy, balanced life, especially in this always-on culture. Throwing on a mask is the perfect way to unwind while taking care of yourself at the same time.

While Palmer’s Purifying Sheet Mask is available at several mass retailers, we found one at Walmart for the best deal!

Say Goodbye to Shiny Skin with this Mattifying Moisturizer

With the unofficial start of summer underway, now’s the time to switch up our beauty routines.

For us with oily skin, that means lighter moisturizers are key to keeping our faces glowy, not greasy. Lately, I’ve been suffering from cystic acne and large pores. That means I have to be even more mindful about the products I use on my skin.

Thankfully, I’ve been using Arbonne RE9 Advanced Prepwork Hydrating Dew Cream to moisturize without the dreaded shine. While it doesn’t treat my excess oil production, it does keep it in check. Formulated with lentil seed and apple extracts, it provides a flawless matte finish that works well with my foundation and concealer. Unlike most moisturizers, this unique cream-to-gel formula is perfect for summer. Plus, it keeps skin soft, supple and dewy.

arbonne-prepwork-dew-cream

Arbonne RE9 Advanced Prepwork Hydrating Dew Cream
available here, $46.

Contrary to popular belief, moisturizing oily skin is necessary. Don’t skimp hydrating shine-prone skin because if you do, it’ll backfire and cause even more oil and possibly breakouts. Whether dry or oily, skin needs moisture regardless. Just be sure to find a lightweight hydrating cream or gel that won’t clog pores, especially during the warmer months.

I’ve been using it for a month now and I’ve been able to put my best face forward, shine free!

What are your favorite products to keep your skin moisturized during the summer?

Dashing Diva’s Nail Polish Strips are a Godsend for Impatient Beauty Buffs

I’m a fairly patient person. However, when it comes to waiting for my nails to dry after a nice manicure, all my patience goes out the window! As a working mom of two, I always feel like I’m wasting so much time sitting in a salon literally watching paint dry. Sure, some might make a mad dash after the first or second UV fan cycle stops, but not me. Since I always manage to smudge or chip my fresh manicure before stepping foot outside, I wait at least 30-40 minutes before leaving to ensure my polish stays perfectly in place. But not anymore.

Enter Dashing Diva’s Ultra-Shine Gel Strips.

dashing-diva-gel-nail-strips-review

Dashing Diva Gloss Gel Nail Strips are available here, $8 and up

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a press preview of the popular nail brand’s newest offerings and was blown away with these gel strips. Available in a wide range of shades, prints and fun decals, these polish alternatives are a game-changer for me. Thanks to the easy, mess-free application, I can get a pretty manicure without the painstaking wait. Plus, I can say good-bye to those pesky smudges that always find a way to ruin my mani. Oh and the best part of all is that these gel color, high-shine and wrinkle-free strips last up to 14 days! I’m going on three weeks of wear and they’re still looking good. I love them so much that I haven’t taken them off yet, which will be as easy as 1-2-3. To remove, all I’ll have to do is simply apply cuticle oil or coconut oil to my cuticles, lift and peel – leaving my nails damage-free!  Seriously, can these strips get any better?
