Ikuzi Dolls: Representing the Diversity of Black Beauty

Like many little girls who were born in the 1980s, I was obsessed with Cabbage Patch dolls. I remember writing letters to Santa Claus pleading that he’d leave one of the yarn-haired dolls under my Christmas tree.

Fast forward 30 years and now I have the pleasure of watching my 6-year-old daughter obsess over her gorgeous Ikuzi Dolls.

Ikuzi Dolls

Ikuzi Dolls are available here, $80

Unlike the dolls of my era, Ikuzi Dolls come in a variety of shades to reflect and celebrate diverse skin tones. The beautifully crafted dolls are also decked out in designer African-inspired outfits that serve as a stylish nod to our rich heritage. Plus, the dolls’ facial features, hair texture and eye colors have all been thoughtfully crafted with us BGs in mind.

Founded by Ozi Okaro, a mom of four who was inspired to create dolls that looked like her daughters, the collection is a lovely representation of black beauty.

It’s so important for our young girls to see beautiful images of themselves and these dolls provide just that. Plus, Ozi aims to add more  skin tones and hair textures to reflect the world’s growing diversity. Wondering if the dolls have names? They don’t. Ozi encourages children to use their imaginations and name their dolls as they see fit. Traveling this summer? Don’t worry, Ikuzi dolls come with a super cute pink carrying case that makes transporting easy.

If you have a little girl in your life, these dolls would make the perfect gift for her birthday, kindergarten graduation or simply as a “just because” present. You’ll bring her joy while supporting a black-owned business. Now that’s a win-win!

A peek at the bluebellgray luncheon held at Park Avenue Autumn in New York City on November 18, 2015.

In celebration of the U.S. launch, the brand and Douglas held an intimate luncheon last month at Park Avenue Autumn in New York City. Unfortunately, due to an incredibly hefty workload on the day of the event, I regrettably wasn’t able to attend. I’m still disappointed about my last-minute cancellation because it was indeed a lovely afternoon. Who wouldn’t regret not being surrounded by beautiful blooms and delicious food?

Although I wasn’t able to attend the luncheon, I’m still thrilled that I can now purchase some of these eye-catching pieces for my place.

STEM-centric ‘Molecules to the MAX!’ DVD Giveaway

Like most moms, I want my 5-year-old daughter to grow up knowing that she can be absolutely anything that she wants to be in this world.

That’s why I’m so happy that young children today, especially girls are being exposed to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) based programs, activities, toys and movies at a far more than the generations before them.

So when I received information about, Giant Screen Film Molecules to the MAX!, a new animated film about science I was excited! The super cute 40-minute movie teaches children about the basic atomic makeup of ordinary items such as snowflakes, pennies and chewing gum. The adorable colorful characters coupled with the brilliant computer animation had my kids glued to their DVD player.  It’s so well-written that it holds their attention while educating them at the same time.

The award-winning movie transported me back to middle school when I was fascinated by molecules and all the science-y stuff that little girls oftentimes aren’t encouraged to be interested in.

If you’re looking for ways to get your kids off of their tablets to watch something of substance, this is an excellent choice!

Coca-Cola & Hello Beautiful Presents: The Kitchen Table with Chef Huda

Several weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend a lovely dinner celebrating the launch of Hello Beautiful’s and Coca-Cola’s web series, “The Kitchen Table.”

Hosted by TV personality and former media maven Bevy Smith, the family-style dinner was held at celebrity chef, Marcus Samuelsson’s popular Red Rooster/Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem.

The eclectic restaurant was the perfect setting to kick-off the food-centric web series, starring “Cut-throat Kitchen” winner Chef Huda, and actresses Tisha Campbell-Martin and Holly Robinson-Peete.

7 Tips on How To Avoid Identity Theft

With the Fourth of July holiday behind us, it’s back to business as usual.

If you were out of town celebrating America’s birthday, hopefully you didn’t share a play-by-play of your whereabouts on social media. If so, you could’ve put yourself at risk of being burglarized or quite possibly becoming a victim of identity theft. Sharing too much personal information online is exactly what thieves thrive on thanks to the conveniences of modern technology and social media.

LifeLockA snapshot from the LifeLock luncheon held at the iconic New York City restaurant, Tavern on the Green on June 26, 2014.

I recently attended a luncheon hosted by LifeLock, an identity and credit protection service, and learned that there are four groups who are even more at risk than the average American.

According to research, individuals who are embarking on a new phase of life are more susceptible to experiencing identity theft. The results indicate that newlyweds, new parents, newly single and new homeowners are all more prone to becoming victims.  In fact, newlyweds are 8 times more likely than the average population to fall victim simply due to insurance updates, name changes, and other miscellaneous paperwork.

For many of us, we will fall into one of these aforementioned categories at some point in our lives. In fact, a couple of years ago my credit card had been used without my authorization. That’s why it’s imperative that we protect ourselves from potential identity theft and online scams. Investing in a service like LifeLock is a smart and effective option. It can safeguard you from having to bear the legal costs of sorting out your life after financial disaster and credit score chaos as a result of identity fraud. As preventative measures it will provide the following: monitor your identity, scan for identity threats and track your credit score.

But, even without credit and identity protection services, there are simple steps that you can take to help keep your identity safe while still enjoying social media and other technological advances.

Check out a few tips below:

* Take identity theft risk seriously—so many don’t believe that it will affect their lives. In fact, 1 out of every 4 adults have their identity stolen.

* Forego a few conveniences such as using the auto-login feature on sites.

* Order your credit report annually.

* Never save private information on a public computer.

* Before you dispose of a mobile device, make sure you delete information permanently.

* Don’t overshare on social networking sites.

* Before you send personal information over your laptop or smartphone on a public wireless network in a coffee shop, library, airport, hotel, or other public place, see if your information will be protected.

For more information on how to protect your identity or what to do if you do become a victim of fraud check out www.consumer.ftc.gov.

If you’ve been wondering why I haven’t updated my blog in over a week, it’s been for a very good reason—the birth of my son!

Ava now has a baby brother who will surely become her partner in crime. Since he came into the world 10 days ago, I’ve already had my fair share of emotional mommy meltdowns and unwarranted anxiety, but those feelings pale in comparison to the love and adoration I have for my baby boy!

For the next few weeks, my posts will probably be sporadic since I’m still navigating the world of mommy-hood part two!

Here’s a pick of my pride and joy:
