Introducing BGG’s New Contributor

It’s with great pleasure that I introduce my new BGG contributor, Khadijah. She holds a master’s degree in journalism and hails from Queens, New York. Khadijah’s looking forward to keeping BGG fresh and on the pulse of what’s new in the world of beauty/style.

I’m sure you guys will enjoy reading her weekly posts on BGG.

Here’s a snapshot of Khadijah’s take on beauty and fashion:

Finding out the latest scoop in celebrity culture, discovering the best beauty products and uncovering the latest fashion trends are my true passions. Working a 9-5 job pays the bills, but browsing an aisle in Sephora makes my heart flutter. I’m grateful for having the opportunity to be a part of the Brown Girl Gumbo family and look forward to keeping you updated with all things that make us brown girls unique and beautiful.

  • Favorite makeup product: Concealer and lipgloss (I can’t choose only one…lol)
  • Style Icon: Rihanna–truly love her adventurous take on the HAIR, fashion and make-up game!
  • Best Hair Product Brand: Cantu products are my go to for styling at the moment. I also love Herbal Essences for washing my hair.
  • Describe Your Style: My style is a combination of boho chic, classic with a twist and whatever makes me feel good that day. I’m currently loving all things with a print pattern as well as bright colors. I can be as earthy as Erykah Badu one day and dolled up like Beyonce the next.
  • Best Advice You’ve Ever Been Given: Very simple–you can’t please everyone….
  • Favorite Quote: Never let people know your moves, let them see the results.
  • Favorite Book: Too many to name.
  • Fashion/Beauty Pet Peeve: Fashion–It’s not always about the size of the clothing, but rather if it fits well. Don’t be afraid to go a size up (or down in some cases). Beauty–Brown girls, don’t be afraid of color. We wear it well!

Heading to the Essence Music Festival?

If you’re one of the thousands making their way to the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans this weekend, be sure to check out Carol’s Daughter Pop-Up Store! From today through the 3rd, the natural beauty company will open its doors for a weekend-only boutique in New Orleans.

Throughout the weekend, you’ll be able to get a sneak sniff of Mary J. Blige’s newest fragrance, My Life Blossom, as well as see a few our favorite celebrities including the faces of Carol’s Daughter (Solange Knowles, Cassie, and Selita Ebanks), as well as Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Trey Songz, The Braxtons and more!

How will you be celebrating the holiday? The hubby and I will be attending the Macy’s 4th Of July Fireworks media event compliments of my friends over at Macy’s. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to see Beyonce perform. Should be an interesting evening! Will report back on Tuesday if it’s good.

I’m Not Abandoning BGG!

Don’t think I’ve abandoned you this week, I’ve just been sick. Will be back on Monday. I missed out on several really cool events that I hope to still give you the deets about next week. Until then, have a wonderful weekend!

P.S Does anyone know of a smart, eager individual who would love to cover some of the coolest beauty & fashion events in New York City on my behalf from time to time? Being a full-time working mom, sometimes I can’t attend events that would be great to feature on BGG. If so, please email me!

Black is Beautiful!

Over the holiday weekend I finally got the chance to watch the preview of the documentary, “Dark Girls,” directed by Bill Duke. If you’re unfamiliar with the video, it explores the deep-seated biases and attitudes about skin color – particularly women of a dark complexion.

The candor of the documentary’s participants is why this must-see video has captured the attention of thousands. Being a mom to a little girl, I can only hope that as she grows up she will love herself regardless of people’s ignorance.

Have you ever had any internal issues about your skin color? Were you ever teased because you were dark-skinned? Please share your thoughts.

Farewell Oprah…

Courtesy of Harpo

Today marks an end of an era in television. For nearly a quarter of a century, millions of viewers from around the world have tuned in and grown up with The Oprah Winfrey Show. Although I was only 6-years-old when the show first hit the airwaves, like so many other 80s babies, Oprah was THE queen of television in my household.

From shows on domestic violence to unbelievable giveaways, The Oprah Winfrey Show has taught me immensely throughout the years. Plus, being a Chicago native, I feel proud to have lived in the city that built Harpo.

It was always my dream to work for her and a few years ago I came VERY close to fulfilling that goal. However, at the time it was not meant to be. I’m sure that her inspiring and uplifting passion to enlighten the world will continue and ultimately go down in history. Oprah is by far one of America’s greatest teachers and I’m forever grateful.

What’s your favorite Oprah show/memory?
