Disney Celebrates International Day of the Girl with Empowering Initiative

When I was a little girl, I dreamed of working at a national glossy magazine like Ebony or Essence. I was mesmerized by the beauty displayed within their pages. Prominent black people being celebrated for their accomplishments in sports, politics, entertainment and other sectors was something that I couldn’t get enough of. Oh, and don’t get me started on the jaw-dropping fashions and gorgeous beauty spreads. Magazines spoke to me in a way that nothing else did. Plus, my passion for writing cemented my quest for turning my dream into a reality (which eventually came to fruition, but at another magazine).

Today my dream is for my 8-year-old daughter to have those same big dreams and to see them come true!

That’s why I’m so happy that Disney’s “Dream Big, Princess” campaign is encouraging young girls worldwide to follow their dreams too.  To celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of the Girl, which is tomorrow, October 11 – Disney is inviting all guests to Disney Parks around the globe to Disney bound in outfits inspired by their favorite female characters who encourage them to be confident, fearless, creative and more! From Moana to Tiana, Disney has many inspiring role models for guests to choose from.

Not sure what Disney bounding is? It’s simply dressing up in regular clothes that are inspired by a character’s ensemble. Matching the character’s color scheme is key! For example, if you’re Disney bounding as Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” a purple, off-the-shoulder top and a glittering, turquoise skirt (sequins preferred) would be the perfect “under the sea” look.

Now that you know how to Disney bound, there’s more! Stay tuned for the #DreamBigPrincess video series later this month, celebrating the inspiring stories and words of advice from female trailblazers across industries and around the world, captured by 21 talented young women from 13 countries.

So, here’s how you can join the empowering movement:

  • Disney bound as your favorite female Disney character tomorrow, October 11th at Disney Parks worldwide
  • From October 10 through November 20th use the hashtag #DreamBigPrincess on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and each “like” will unlock a US $1 donation from Disney Worldwide Services to Girl Up, the United Nations Foundation’s program supporting girls’ leadership and empowerment (minimum donation: $500,000/maximum donation: $1 million).

Before you dress up in your best Disney bounding ensembles, be sure to read Disney’s guidelines and attire rules, etc.:
