Pixie Dust Dreams: A Magical Morning at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

My family and I have made plenty of priceless memories at Walt Disney World.

But, there’s one magical experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart—our pre-dawn visit and breakfast at Animal Kingdom.

animal-kingdom-disney-world

The exclusive early sunrise event was held during the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration this past February and it was the stuff of pixie dust dreams.

Entering the park before daybreak was beyond anything I could’ve imagined. The tranquility created an unforgettable, enchanting atmosphere. Hearing the chirping birds, seeing the dewy greenery and breathing in the warm, misty air was like a fantasy—perfectly fitting for a Disney Park. The magic was palpable.

animal-kingdom-pandora

To walk through the park without anyone but the #DisneySMMC crew (the park wasn’t open to the public yet), was an opportunity of a lifetime. Upon reaching Pandora—The World of Avatar, we were met with two options: indulge in a delicious breakfast fit for kings and queens or explore the park’s two new popular attractions: The Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. We chose the latter and decided to eat after experiencing the rides.

As the sun began to rise, we made our way to Flight of Passage where we were completely blown away by Pandora’s spellbinding beauty. Colorful flora and cascading waterfalls abound. We had been transported to another world: The World of Avatar.

An unforgettable flight – Flight of Passage
Our excitement grew with every step along the winding pathway to Avatar Flight of Passage. Once inside the cavern-like space, which was outfitted as a science lab—we saw a blue male creature floating in a giant test tube. It was Jake Sully from Avatar! I thought my 4-year-old son would be frightened by the blue being, but to my surprise he was in awe and fascinated by it.

Once we entered the launch pods, we were prepped for what would be an incredible journey through the land of Pandora. From start to finish, we were immersed in a fanciful alternative universe where we rode flying banshees and soared through the sky. The virtual reality ride felt so real—we could feel water splashing on our faces, the wind whipping through our hair and every dip and drop—engaging all our senses.

To say the 3D ride was exhilarating would be an understatement. Simply put, it was the best ride I’ve ever experienced. My daughter would agree because she rode it THREE times!

A Na’vi River Journey
For me, nothing is as relaxing and soothing as a boat ride. That’s why I absolutely loved hopping on the Na’vi River Journey for a smooth ride through Pandora’s everglades. Our eyes and ears were treated at every turn. Glowing violets, electric blues and emerald green plants and floating jellyfish surrounded us—creating a mystical wonderland.

navi-river-journey-pandora-ride

Near the end of the rainforest journey, we were entranced by the Na’vi Shaman of Song’s mesmerizing music.  The catchy chants had us humming the tunes long after the ride was over.

Like the classic Magic Kingdom ride, It’s a Small World, Na’vi River Journey is one that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Magical Breakfast
After exploring Pandora, we made our way to breakfast where we found a bountiful spread to get us energized for what would be a full day at Animal Kingdom. The rest of our time at the park was one of my most cherished memories. We visited DinoLand U.S.A where we rode Dinosaur and explored the Boneyard. Then we took a safari through Africa where my kids saw giraffes, hippopotamuses and flamingos for the first time! It was an incredible experience that none of us will soon forget.

I love all the Disney Parks & Resorts, but if I were forced to choose a favorite, it just might be Animal Kingdom!

Review: Upgrade Movie Night with West Bend’s Theater Popcorn Machine

When it comes to snacks, popcorn reigns supreme in my home.

With four picky eaters, it’s one of the few snacks our family can agree upon. From caramel to kettle to chocolate-covered, we can’t get enough of the quintessential snack.

So, when I heard about West Bend’s Theater Popcorn Machine, I knew it would be an instant hit with my family.

westbend-stirring-theater-popcorn-machine

West Bend Stirring Theater Popcorn Machine is available here, $80.

My kids (ages 4 and 8) had never eaten freshly-popped popcorn outside of a movie theater. So, I was sure they would be thrilled by the idea of making and eating it at home. Honestly, I was excited too because growing up in the late ‘80s and ‘90s, making fresh popcorn is foreign to me. I’m part of the instant-gratification generation where we microwaved everything, especially popcorn.

When the popcorn machine arrived, we were all looking forward to trying it out. At first, I was slightly intimidated by some of the sturdy, steel parts, but my fears quickly subsided after reading over the super easy instructions. After enlisting my husband to help out, we were off and popping in no time. In fact, it took under 10 minutes to fully assemble. Plus, popping the corn is just as simple—it’s a two-step process.

After adding the oil, we got the kids in on the fun by letting them scoop out the kernels and pour them into the non-sticking kettle (it can make up to 4 quarts). Within 3 minutes, we began to hear the highly-anticipated crackling sounds. My 4-year-old son jumped for joy when he saw the fluffy white kernels bursting and shooting from the kettle. Watching his unfiltered excitement was priceless. As a family, we were transfixed by all of the popping action. Admittedly, the popcorn “show” turned my husband and I into kids again.

west-bend-theater-popcorn-review

As we looked on, we knew that movie night and the kids’ sleepovers would never be the same. We had upgraded to a whole other level. No more bagged, store-bought popcorn or the greasy microwavable kind. We were entering a new, healthier territory. I always try to instill in my children that fresh is always best and now they know that applies to popcorn too. And, they don’t have to say goodbye to flavor—the sky’s the limit when it comes to natural flavors (depending on your spice collection and creativity).

Oh, and the cleanup was quick and easy too. Plus, the machine is compact and attractive—major wins for New York residents like me who live in small spaces. It can be easily stored in a cabinet or be placed in the nook of a countertop. Truthfully, what’s not to love about his popcorn machine? It’s a fun and convenient family-friendly activity that provides a healthy alternative to other snacks.

If you’re still on the hunt for a nice Mother’s Day gift, this would make the perfect present. Go ahead, make snacking great again! I’m so glad we did.

*I was provided a West Bend Theater Popcorn Machine for review purposes only. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Do you make fresh popcorn at home? What are your Mother’s Day plans?

Review: ‘Summer: The Donna Summer Musical’ Dazzles on Broadway

There are many divas, but there’s only one disco diva and her name was Donna Summer.

The late singer’s legacy lives on in the new Broadway show, “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” now playing at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater.

When I first heard that the Boston native’s contribution to music was going to be celebrated on the Great White Way, I was excited and knew I had to see the show.

donna-summer-musical-broadway

Last Thursday, I had the wonderful pleasure of catching the stunning performance during its first week.

The show was incredible from start to finish.

Donna-Summer-Musical

Narrated from Summer’s perspective, the show opens with her performing a final concert where she takes the audience on a trip down memory lane. Thus, her intriguing story is set to the soundtrack of some of her hottest tracks.

From “Love to Love You, Baby” to “Bad Girls” to “Hot Stuff,” the bio-musical is filled with Summer’s Grammy-award winning disco hits to keep audiences dancing in their seats. In fact, the score includes more than 20 of her classic hits.

My cousin and I enjoying “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” on Thursday, April 26, 2018.

Plus, the show reveals some personal aspects about Summer—pulling the curtain back and providing theatergoers with details that give a fuller glimpse into the diva’s rise to fame.

Directed by Des McAnuff, not only is her story remarkably told through her timeless music, but the hair, makeup and of course, the costumes are spectacular! You can’t have a musical predominately set in the disco era of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s without elaborate ensembles to reflect the decadent decades—and the show didn’t disappoint.

Summer-The-Donna-Summer-Musical

Bold lips, big bouncy hair and glittery getups are front and center as the cast led by Tony award-winning LaChanze who plays the mature “Diva Donna,” Ariana Debose as the adult in her prime “Disco Donna” and Storm Lever who portrays the young “Duckling Donna” electrifies the stage.

Each of the “Donnas’” powerhouse vocals were on full display as they belted out the hits that made crowned Summer the Queen of Disco and a pioneer of an entire musical genre.

While it’s hard to choose a favorite scene, if asked, I’d have to go with the finale, which reached a fever-pitch and got people on their feet. The immense energy in the room roused the crowd and was a testament to the magic of Broadway musicals.

Produced by entertainment heavyweight, Tommy Mottola and the Dodgers, the show is a spellbinding trip back in time for those who lived through the disco era and a treat for music lovers of all generations.

For more information and tickets, visit DonnaSummerMusical.com.

Editor’s Note: LaChanze is nominated for a Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical and Ariana DeBose is up for the Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical.

The show runs 100 minutes with no intermission.

Lunt-Fontanne Theater is located, 205 W. 46th Street, New York, NY.

Harmony Program’s 10th Anniversary Gala Raises $800,000 to Benefit Music Students

There are countless languages spoken around the world, but there’s one that’s universally understood: music.

Rhythms, grooves and melodies can instantly bring people together across cultures, education levels and socioeconomic backgrounds.

harmony-program-anniversary-benefit

The beauty of music’s transcendence was evident at the 10th Annual Harmony Program benefit gala held last week at 583 Park Avenue on the city’s upper east side.

I had the pleasure of attending the anniversary gala and it was a night to remember.

harmony-10th-anniversary-gala

The formal event honored the Harmony Program, a nonprofit organization that partners with schools and community centers to provide after-school music education in New York City.

The event celebrated the program’s access and excellence in music education with intimate orchestral performances by world-class artists including Grammy-award violinist Joshua Bell, Anthony McGill, Larisa Martinez, Jorge Glem, Time for Three, and Lena Hall.

Hosted by NBC News’s Harry Smith and sponsored by Warner Music Group, attendees were treated to the mesmerizing sounds of young students and budding artists whose musical gifts were on full display.

With classic orchestra renditions of “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra and “Summertime” by Ella Fitzgerald, the haunting tunes were well received with thunderous applause and praise. I was blown away by the perfectly-executed performances and equally impressed by the students’ professionalism and undeniable talent.

After witnessing the students’ aptitude for creating exquisite music, it comes as no surprise that the benefit raised $800,000.

From reading music to playing orchestral instruments, every child should have the access and resources to support their musical ambitions regardless of their backgrounds.

With nearly one million dollars raised, the Harmony Program can continue to enrich students’ lives through instrumental music education—and that’s music to my ears.

For more information about the Harmony Program, read on here.

Did you play an instrument in school? If so, what and do you still play now?

While the show is only open to professionals working, or studying in the beauty or fashion fields, I’m bringing some of the expertise to you BEFORE the show even starts.

I caught up with celebrity makeup artist James Vincent to get the scoop on the hottest trends for spring.

Check them out below:

TREND #1: PRETTY IN PASTEL
It’s no surprise when pale pastels make their way on the runway for spring. This season they are back as expected but with softer, sexier, ‘70 vibes. Sweep shadows across the entire lid from lash to brow for a beautiful, modern look or add in a pastel liner for an even easier step into spring. Try MAKE UP FOR EVER XL Pencils in a wide array of pretty pastels or cream shadows from Kryolan or Mehron for long wear and easy to apply options. For a more traditional shadow choice Urban Decay or Stila Metallics are an easy to apply stay-all-day option.

TREND #2: BLUE MONDAY
Blue shadow from the ‘70 and ‘80s was all about hard edges and lines. This season blue was beautiful in its imperfection. Blue shadows in powders and creams smudged across the lid and lash line are on trend. Dip your finger or a soft brush into the product and swipe. Try Cozette Shadows for a wide array of beautiful blues or Danessa Myricks Beauty Color Fix Creams for an assortment of blues in every hue. Pat McGrath Labs Mothership Palettes have a wide range of the most beautiful blue shades and all the colors you need to make yourself look red carpet or runway ready.

TREND #3: DISCO DOLLY
Glitter is taking over. Glitter hit the runway once again, but for spring 2018 it has a gorgeous grunge aesthetic. Pair it with a smoky, smudge pencil line for a look that feels more adult. Try Lemonhead Space Jams for glitters in every shade that stay put and be sure to check out their collaboration with Alcone, cleverly called Alconeholic; it is a seasonal must-have. For more loose glitters in all colors, try Graftobian, Kryolan, Eye Kandy or Stila.

The-Makeup-Show-NYC-2

TREND #4: EDGE PLAY
Over-the-top black eyeliner in graphic shapes and exaggerated application is a huge trend for the season. Crown Brush Liquid Eyeliner is an affordable option in a beautiful black pen. NYX Cosmetics has liners in every formulation that are easy to use and last all day and night. Stillazzi Cosmetics launches their all new Borderline Gel Liners and the bold, rich black shade of Jet is easy to apply and ideal for every skin tone.

TREND #5: SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND
Inspired by the makeup of Japan and Korea, glazed skin has an almost glasslike effect. Primers like Limelight by Alcone are a perfect addition beneath any foundation. Melanie Mills Hollywood’s Gleam Collection is perfection for every skin tone. Try her Disco Smoke or Rose Gold under and over any foundation for an unforgettable look.

TREND #6: HIGH TEA
Wearable tea-stained shades for eyes and cheeks offer a less dramatic option for this season. Pair it with one of the more dramatic option above or wear it on its own for everyday wear. This soft brown or sepia trend is terrific on eyes, lips and lids. Look to MustaeV or Muse Beauty Brow for some gorgeous options, or check out must-have palettes from Viseart, Marc Jacobs or Violet Voss that delivers the tea-stained shades alongside every color you need for spring.

TREND #7:  SEEING RED
The red lip is back once more but with a much softer edge. Look to classic lipsticks to offer a polished look without hard lines. Pair your perfect red with a nude pencil like the beautiful colors available from Gerard Cosmetics and get a red that is timely and timeless!

Are you attending The Makeup Show this year? Which beauty trend are you excited to try this spring?
