Summer Reading Round-Up!

The summer is a time for relaxing and what better to relax than to curl up on the couch or in the grass with a page-turning book! I’ve always been a fan of self-help books, biographies and autobiographies. One of the very first (non-children’s) books I remember reading as a child was LaToya Jackson’s autobiographical expose of her famous family. I don’t know if it’s the journalist in me who is intrigued by other people’s lives or what, but nothing holds my attention like a great biography/autobiography!

What are your favorite book genres? Are you a mystery, romance or thriller fan? Do you have any summer read suggestions?

Here are a few of the books I plan on reading this summer:

Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne by James Gavine available here.

The Supremes: A Saga of Motown Dreams, Success, and Betrayal by Mark Ribowsky available here.

Confessions of a Beauty Addict by Nadine Haobsh available here.

More Than Just Race: Being Black and Poor in the Inner City by William Julius available here.

The Black Girl Next Door a Memoir by Jennifer Baszile available here.

  1. BGG, I love reading! Unfortunately, it’s been quite a while since my last read. Fortunately, my children are gone until August so it’s now or never. I think I’ll stop by the book store today and pick up a couple of good ones. I think I want the one about the black girl next door!!

  2. This summer I plan to read the Confessions of a Shopaholic series. I think that the last book that I read which actually had substance was “The Miseducation of the Negro”. I haven’t read many books like that one. I’m a fan of romance and drama. Confessions of a Beauty Addict sounds like a good one.

    Tks!

  4. I think I will totally pick up Black girl Next door…maybe tomorrow.
    Thanks

  5. GREAT POST! I’m adding all of these to my amazon wish list. My favorite books are self-help with personal and career, thrillers/mysteries (but not scary books) and chick lit. All very different, I know, but I have to switch it up to stay interested.

Something about reading about other people’s lives just doesn’t do it for me. The way I figure everyone has their own story…minus the book deal. Anywho, I’m a big fiction, fantasy, mystery girl and I don’t go anywhere w/o a book. Any good recommendations?

  8. I love reading & there’s nothing like lounging around reading in the summer…whether on the deck, in a hammock, in bed, at a beach or a park or on the porch. Thanks for the book suggestions. I have an ever growing “to read” list but I’ll have to check ’em out.

I like to read a little bit of everything…OH I m a big fan of self help books too. have you read THE FIRST 30 DAYS BY ARIAN DE BONVOISIN…one of plenty on my wish list. I have to check out Confessions of a Beauty Addict and The Black Girl next door…I definitely can relate to being the only black girl in an all white school…crazy! anyway I love your blog and a great post! take care

  11. Oh wow, funny you should mention this as I’ve just rediscovered my love of biographies. Currently reading The Magic and the Madness, the biography of MJ written by Randy Taraborelli. Since his death I’ve become intrigued by his life, almost to the point of obsession, lol. I’m almost a quarter of a way through the book and really enjoying it. Not half as salacious and sensationalist as I expected it to be.

    Thanks for your recommendations

  12. I love reading… I’ve been wanting to read something light these days. So I think Confessions of a Beauty Addict could be my next book! Thanks for the rec BGG <3
